Hot Weather Warning!

As someone who lives somewhere very hot I would just like to share …

The first 2 weeks after chemo you can feel relly horrid really quickly if you get too hot …

The third week is less bad - the body can cope far better

Being toasted in a car is partcularly not recommended …

Just thought I’d share that as I know the weather in the UK has been in many was awful but for chemo it’s not bad - other than it’s depressing!!!)

I hardly go out in the day now … and I’ve never had a problem with heat before this - always worn cardies at night on holidays as have been so cold!

Anyway - be prepared is all I can say … you may be lucky and not be like me but you might need to take things a bit easier once it’s hot …

good luck everyone

Thanks Fiz, you’re a star as always.

I’d also add that walking when it’s humid (like today) is MUCH harder than you’d think too.

and don’t forget to put factor 40+ on your bonce if you do go bare headed - it was warm yesterday so I read for 20mins in the garden commando and now I’m sporting a very fetching pink scalp!!

Td mate what did you do to your poor head…know what you mean tho …i was sat out side in my mate’s garden and had to go in as my head was burning …you dont realize do you ???

sal

Anybody know where we can get hoodie teeshirts? I use hoodies sweatshirts at home - instant head covering when required, but I’m absolutely BOILING now!!!

Thanks for thinking of us Fix - it doesn’t take much to burn, does it!

Very useful advice Fiz, its been hot here and I hear that for us summer is going to come back ??? It’s been at least 28 degrees every day so what is summer then??

Off to have the next chemo next Monday and really could do with it being a little bit cooler - like Fiz normally I love the heat and enjoy the sunshine but, not with cancer.

Slap on the sun cream ladies and don’t forget the hats (I do wish we had aircon too for the two weeks after chemo)

Enjoy, but be safe xxx

I would just like to add that you can get buffs that are UV resistant and so are quite safe to wear in the sun.

HI everyone

Just in case we do get any decent weather I am reposting this advice from one of our Breast Cancer Care nurses.

all the best

Ann

Hello,
Staying safe in the sun is really important for everyone, as over recent years we have seen an increase in skin cancers, and whilst this is still one of the most curable cancer sadly some people do die from the disease.

When a person has been treated for breast cancer there are certain extra precautions to take when in the sun;

During chemotherapy try not to sit in the direct sunlight for very long, avoid the midday time when the sun is at its hottest, cover the skin up with a high factor sun cream and where long sleeve tops. Chemotherapy makes the skin more sensitive, and therefore more prone to sun burn.

During radiotherapy, keep the area being treated covered up. Talk with your radiotherapy department about what factor suncream they advice, most will say factor 15 and above for this country and higher if traveling abroad. It is best not to apply suncream to the area being treated, but to keep this area completely covered from the sun.

For those on hormone treatments, it is not known that hormone treatments make the skin sensitive. Good skin care is advised, wearing only factor 15 and above in the UK and higher when traveling abroad. For many people on hormone treatments hot flushes can be a problem, and the hot weather can make these worse. Wearing loose cotton clothing, drinking plenty of water and keeping out of direct sunlight can help.

There are many different skin types and some are more sensitive than others to the sun, and therefore more likely to burn in the sun. Boots the high street chemist have excellent trained staff to assess a person’s skin type, and advise about suncream both for the UK and when traveling abroad.

As a general rule I would always suggest going higher rather than lower in suncream factors, having a sunburn is really not worth the risks involved.

Enjoy the good weather, long may it last!!

Tara

hi all

it’s not just the sun it’s the heat - you’ll know what I mean if your body gets too hot … mine starts sweating and can’t stop and then I feel totally wiped out …

good luck anyway and enjoy the summer!

Hi Fizbix

Where abouts is it that you live. I live in Spain and have had all my treatment here. I live in the country and some days the tempreture reaches 41-44 during the day and about 21-24 at night. I have a fan in the lounge and one in the bedroom and rarley step away from them.

I have lived here 5 years and the heat seems more unbearable this year than any other year. I think wearing a head scarf when i go out means i cant loose heat from my head. Im also very aware of being out in the sun and have to try to remember to put cream on

Good luck with all your treatment

Am in the closet for business reasons - may come out when have the “all clear”. Would love to tell you where I live but don’t dare.

Where you live sounds HOT - presumably you live in the mountains - it would be rude to ask as I can’t share back.

Sounds like you need a fan assisted parasol - having said that the air itself is probably hot.

At least we remember to drink enough!

FB I know what you mean. Before BC I was on HRT now nothing and ordinary flushes are bad enough, but chemo flushes are horrible, they make your head bang, you get breathless and sweat. Imean sweat not just persipartion. get a battery fan with a water sprayer Brill I take mine everywhere, except the wedding at the weekend. I bought a dainty hand fan from accessorize £3. nice.

Love to all

Bridie

Well I have had two FECs so far and am due 3rd next Monday. Just spent all day on beach at wonderful West Wittering without any ill effects. Did not notice any extra heating up from sun more than usual! Was well covered up though. Wore scarf - no hair - and sun hat. Wore thin shirt to cover arm against lymphodema. Factor 50 on affected arm and 15 on legs. Left thigh caught the sun but no more than it usually would have.

Have to say - when I was on epi I was very cold at night - especially my feet which had to have a hot water bottle or else they hurt due to the cold

TAX is much warmer all round and made a pleasant change! … so this may be a problem for TAX only - rather than Epi … hope so …
good luck

Hi FB

All sounds very mysterious. Yes i do live in the moutains. Where im living at the moment is in a valley so some days it seems very still with no air. The nights are the worse as its hard to sleep when its so hot. I have totally finished my treatment now, WLE, chemo & rads… Are you having rads after chemo?

I think im actually going through the menapouse now HOORAY…

Dont stop drinking and peeing all day LOL

Take care

Lynndx

Hi Lynnd

yes I am having rads - think for 6 weeks and not sure when starting - waiting for phonecall …

lovely to have finished treatment - I feel like I’m on a treatment holiday!!! Am hoping periods won;t come backk … they have stopped after putting up a big fight - the last one was horrendous and went on for days!!!

living in a valley - sounds very pretty!

Hi FB

Im quiet lucky that i had a hysterectomy 5 years ago so i have been period free since then so didnt have to suffer that along with everything else.

I only had 4 weeks of rads, was really suprised at how quickley it went.

Know this sounds very stupid but am completley bored now. My 2 youngest children are back in England for the summer and my days seem very long. I spend most of my days reading and watching dvds.

The valley is very pretty and very peacefull. I have only lived here for 5 months before that i lived in a small spanish village but much prefer the country.

I noticed in your posting that you work, are you able to say what it is that you do!!!

Enjoy your break from treatment

Hi everyone

Just clicked on this forum and read the threads.Thank you… i now feel alot better and not now thinking i have caught some kind of illness. I have been sweating like crazy and feeling breathless, while chemo treatment and that is just doing simple chores around the house. A couple of nights ago it was really humid and it made me feel like cr@p. The hotter it gets the worse i feel!!!

Lynne - i sympahise with you. My son goes to is dads next Wednesday for 3 weeks and the house is going to feel really quiet. Especially during the day when my hubby is at work.

Kirsty xx

Hi Kirsty - you sound just like me - it’s a bit of a b*gg*r isn’t it … and I also find that if I get hot it takes my system ages to sort itself out again …sleeping is really the only option to recover … although I have to day that the recovery sleeps are now getting a bit shorter - it was 4 hours a couple of weeks ago … whereas i can recover in only 2 now - how speedy is that ???
don’t overdo it and avoid as much cooking, ironing etc as possible! …

hello Fizbix and Lynne

I know what you mean about being in the closet, it is the same for some here who live in France.

We are not too far away then, driving it takes us 4 hours to get to Barcelona. The heat here has been unbearable, its not so bad on week 3 of chemo course, but the first 2 weeks - WOW. Lynne have you lived in Spain for long? We’ve been in SW France for just 6 months, and before that the north of France. We left all our friends behind and so far are here pretty much alone as we haven’t had the chance to get out and about to meet people.

We moved to SW France because we like the heat, then wham bam, I go and get cancer. How’s that for luck?

hello Kirsty hope you are feeling a bit cooler now, isn’t it funny that normally we all love the sunshine?

Hope the sleeps get smaller FB

Kirsty, take the opportunity when your son is away to rest and recuperate, or catch up on all those things you’ve been meaning to to. 3 weeks will pass quickly.

Did I read somewhere that you shouldn’t go swimming when on chemo? I’ve been using the pool to cool off in when its just been too hot. I don’t seem to have suffered any further side effects from it and in fact, I find it quite therapeutic actually.

Anyway, enough for now, have a good weekend everyone
