How long do the chemotherapy drugs stay in your system? How long is your immune system compromised?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows the answers to these questions please?

Thanks, OAD

I would say everyone is different. It depends on what chemo you’ve had and the strength and how you body responds. I know side effects can last for years. I’m into my 3rd chemo I’m ok but the 2nd day after can feel grotty for 2 to 5 days after.

Hi Oad,

such a good question - this is what I wound on the subject -

QUOTE - In fact, most chemotherapy drugs remain in the body for only a few hours or days. They’re broken down by the kidneys and liver and excreted in the urine, stool, or sweat.
A variety of factors can influence how long it takes for the drugs to leave your body, including the type of chemotherapy you’ve received, the presence of other medicines in your system, your age, and how well your liver and kidneys are working. Damage to an organ can slow down the process of drug removal.
It’s important to bear in mind that even though chemotherapy is rapidly metabolized and eliminated from the body, the effects – and side effects – of the drugs can last a long time, depending on the type of chemotherapy involved. Your doctor can give you a range of how long any side effects are likely to last. - END QUOTE

Well, we do know we loose the E of the FEC, once we stop having pink urine - so above rings quite true. I certainly can vouch for us excreting via sweat, too! Shortly after treatment my sweat is not as it usually is - apart from sweating an awful lot more - it is also more viscous. So I tend to wash my towels after about day 6 to get rid of the toxins. Also, sort of proof is my cat! - Initially thought he was imitating me - being very tired and lethargic the days post my treatment. Then it dawned on me - he was regularly ‘grooming’, i.e. licking, my hands and arms - such a loving cat! - However he was licking the toxins coming out of my skin, hence he became tired and lethargic. Having figured that out - no more ‘grooming’ and he is now back to normal.
