How long for biopsy results?

Hello all

I am new to the site today. I am 38 years old and a mother to three girls aged 9 and under. I have had a series of health problems over last 7 years, kidneys disease, endometrosis and ablations, painful bladder syndrome, and with a history of breast cancer in the family 9nan and aunt) have always checked my breasts quite regulary. Two months ago I noticed changes to the nipple on my left breast with a darkened area and raised white patches in the middle, I then started to experienced constant pain and the breast changed shape a little. I went to Gp finally last week and she said she felt a ‘thickening’ in that breast that was not in the other. I was reffered as ‘urgent’ to the local breast clinic and a appointment came through for 12 days post Gp visit, this Monday coming. Their letter says that I am due to have exam, Mammogram and biopsy and that results of mammogram will be given that day but that biopsy takes longer…does anyone know how long these results take? suddenly I am quite anxious as I have to go away for a week to Cornwall 5 days after the appointment and dont really want it to drag on until my return, also if they needed to see me straight away I wouldn’t be home for a week :frowning:

I do have private care with husbands work and was going to take this option but decided after seeing two friends going through the NHS and my mother in law that they were treated so well and so quickly it was not necessary plus I had a ultrasound 4 years ago privately which may cause problems with a claim now, are biopsy results much quicker privately does anyone know?

Sorry for the million questions, trying to remain happy for the girls and hubby and not show how worried I am…I am just in recovery from a Vaginal Hysterectomy three months ago so they have had enough of my health problems I am sure plus dont want my girls to know what tests I am having as they will be worried as there nan is just in recovery from it now.

Cheers for listening, any advice much appreciated .

Hi
Sorry I can’t help with a time scale for results. Mine were the same day as the other tests. Each hosp seems to have their own system. I just wanted to wish you luck, you have obviously had a really rough time with your health.

I wouldn’t worry too much about being away on holiday. If you let them know at the clinic and are really anxious about your results you could possibly phone the breast care nurse. They can arrange appointments to fit around holidays. I hope things work out well for you. Dx

Hi angiemate

Welcome to the BCC forums, here’s a link to the BCC ‘Referral to a breast clinic’ publication which you may find helpful to read prior to your appointment. You will also find further support information in here such as our helpline which you are free to call for a ‘listening ear’.

Thank you Midge and thank you Lucy for the link .

Hi Angiemate…
From my experience the biopsy results take approx 1 week on the NHS. I too had PHI but was in such a state that I forgot about it at diagnosis - once diagnosed I started using it.
Waiting for the results is the worse time, but will pass.
Re your holiday, maybe phone the breast clinic and get advice, the results may take longer and be quicker.
Hope your results are good
Best Wishes
Marguerite

i got dx last aug. I had the mamo the week before my clinic appointment . Then when i went to breast clinic - i had biopsies/scan in the Mon. Retured the same Thurs for the results. Dont know about the private clinics, though.
