I have been told I will have to have Phesgo alongside my next round of Chemo. How long will I have to have Phesgo? Is it a set number of cycles or just dependent on the progress of the cancer? Also, I am concerned that Phesgo may affect my heart. I have microvascular angina but I have been told that I will have a MUGA scan? so my heart will be monitored.
Hi scubacat
Thank you for posting.
It’s natural to have concerns about possible side effects from the Phesgo treatment that has been recommended in particular any possible heart changes.
Decisions about treatment are made by your multidisciplinary team and many factors are considered including the type, grade, size and stage of the cancer, as well as your general health and fitness. You may have Phesgo for up to a year, but your treatment team can discuss this with you in more detail as they are aware of your individual situation.
Before starting treatment with Phesgo, you will have tests, such as the MUGA scan you mentioned, to check your heart function. This is because Phesgo can sometimes cause changes to the heart muscle. You will continue to have heart function tests every 3 months during your treatment.
You should be given a 24-hour contact number or be told who to contact if you feel unwell at any time during your treatment, including overnight or at weekends. If you’re worried about any side effects during treatment, do talk to your chemotherapy nurse or treatment team.
