Hi Rhona
My dressings came off at my first post op appointment (had WLE) and I stopped wearing the stockings when I left the hospital. Had no history of DVT or anything and nobody told me otherwise.

I know what you mean about the stockings driving you mad though - had veins in leg stripped many years ago and had to wear them for six weeks then but that is a whole other scenario.

Suggest you ring your BCN and check with her.

Good luck - Diana x

i had wle(2 incisions) and snb. nobody at hosp advised me(desperate to go home!)op on mon, shallow bath on wed morn by which dressings had fallen off and drove me mad, itchy and stinky! took them off apart from steri strips.i had internal stitches and the outer incision glued.took old dressings off gently with warm water then dressed it my self for couple days, felt cleaner and healed well.alex xx

ps, didnt have the pleasure of the lovely stockings!

Hi, I was told to keep the stockings on for 2 days until I started moving around more. I changed my 2 dressings after 3 days for clean ones, but left them covered for a week as they were still very raw looking.

Hi Rhona, had my op on 12th Jan and kept my lovely green stockings until I saw my surgeon which was two weeks later. My mother has DVT so I was taking precautions. I did see the BCN in between who said I could stop wearing them, but I was too scared! Only the experts can give you advice. Adi

Hi I had wide local & snb, came home in stockings & took them off before I went to bed that night. Took my stapping off after 48 hours as was told, then got in the shower 3 days later & gently took off the dressing. Saw my doctor after 7 days & he said I could get the wound wet as it was now water proof, hope this helps lesley xx

i had my wle on a wens and by the sunday i removed all dressings like the rest of you they were driving me mad as for the stocking well they came off same night as op wash and was given to my autisn son who loves the feel of them so they now on a teddy lol

I took my stockings off before leaving hospital, but I wear support tights regularly as I have an inherited tendency to varicose veins helped on by 3 children. If you are moving around and changing position rather than lying in bed or sitting in a chair for prolonged periods and don’t have any history of vein problems, I would take them off. I’m sure 6 weeks must be for the bedbound. But you can always check with your breast care nurse.

The dressings depend a bit on the kind, position and size of op. I have had the same problem with itching and irritation, and the dressings have been removed or partly removed at different times. It might be possible to have them removed and a different kind put on if you still need a dressing. Sometimes a nurse can do this at your GP’s, or a breast care nurse might be able to see you.

Good luck, we’ve got enough to worry about without these irritations.
