How soon after last chemo did you take first Tamoxifen Tablet

Hi Folks

Hope everyone is ok on this beautiful sunny day.

I’m after a bit of advice really, had my last session of Tax chemo yesterday and have got my prescription for Tamoxifen.

My question is how soon did you start your tamoxifen after your last chemo session? I’ve had conflicting advise from my onc and registrar. Onc says to start one week after my last session (seemed quite soon to me) then asked registrar yesterday and she says 6 weeks as some very vague evidence that can interrupt the effects and cause blood clots if taken sooner? I will double check this with them but I just wondered what everyone else was advised?

Hugs and love

I started taking it about 3 weeks after finishing chemo as i was going on holiday and couldnt face it.

Its annoying when you get conflicting advice.

Getting a blood clot is a possible side affect with tamoxifen but i shouldnt think you would develop one until the drug is well into your system which i think takes about a month but i maybe wrong on that one.

I am sure others will give you good advice and maybe the nurse on BCC will help you could always ring them.

I started RT 2 weeks after finishing chemo and saw my oncologist on the second day when he gave me a prescription for Tamoxifen. I started the next day.

Thanks for your advice - I’ve e-mailed the nurse too so will see what they say. I’m on my number 2 herceptin as well so i wondered if this had anything to do with the conflicting advice as well - We’ll see!!!

Ive just started tomoxifin 2 days ago and my oncoligist told me to wait 4 weeks after finishing my last chemo before takeing it, this was to give time for the body to recover from chemo.
All the best

Hi Mel,
I was told I could start it whenever I wanted, so long as it was no more than a few months, and given the prescription. I said I’d like to wait until after Xmas, as I’d had Herceptin and wanted to be able to separate out any side-effects from the different treatments, and so any side-effects wouldn’t spoil Xmas. That meant a gap of about five weeks.
Hope this helps

Hi saw my onc today , he said I should start taking it around beginning of radiotherapy . I have delayed my rads a little due to easter hols but for me it will be 6 weeks. He did say it should be at least 3 weeks after chemo.
