Hurrah Prosthetics Nurse

Hello all,

I posted a couple of months ago about a very negative experience with a nurse at Prosthetics Clinic during a reassessment visit.  Fortunately,  due to being able to access services  in two places,  I decided to access another NHS Prosthetics Clinic in a different area.

The experience could not have been more different.  The staff member assisting was empathetic, caring and professional.   I got a new smaller boob,  and a very comfy free Amoena smooth t shirt bra plus can order these bras from them for about 40% cost. I don’t know about anyone else but I find it easy to find pretty lace pocketed bras at a decent price (from Asda)  but not good fitting smooth t shirt bras.

I made an official complaint about the other Service/nurse which was responded to.  I will make official positive feedback about the second service used  and especially about the staff member.   Hope everyone else who has to use prosthetics clinics have a very positive experience too.

Hi Chick

I had to put this part off because of rib injuries and I’ve managed with tight vests or my knitted knocker in an Asda bra. I went to the prosthesis clinic last week and thoroughly enjoyed myself, though I felt like I was in a fishmongers, feeling the weight of these cold flabby objects. The nurse was friendly and so considerate, overly so as I don’t have the slightest hang-up about my scars or one-boobedness - I had to assure her I was fine with it all. I’m going back next week because she’s ordered something else for me to try and she was determined I get exactly the right size and shape (some were way too perky for a perfect match and a prominently pink nipple made me want to giggle rather than welcome the naturalness of it).

I take my hat off to you for standing up for us patients and complaining. It will pay off for future patients even if it was horrid for you. Glad you’ve found something comfortable.

Hi, I just wanted to share my experience on thus subject. I was invited to discuss a prosthesis when I felt the time was right, so I made am appointment and trundeled off to the Breast Clinic last week. Although I have the outcome - a filler to even me up - the experience wasn’t what I imagined considering all the encouragement to “move on” and “be positive” we receive. The nurse seemed very inexperienced and seemingly trying to avoid anything to do with my breast and purpose of visit. I was asked to complete a questionnaire on how I was ‘coping’ physchologically and practically. Which was then used as a tool to dispense umpteen leaflets on Look Good Feel Better etc. This is all very lovely but it starts to feel like lip service after a while. I said I was hopeful she would take a look at my breast, check healing after rads etc, but she didn’t have the slightest interest. Eventually she fetched the box of sample prosthesis and set to work shoving them into my bra to the point I was wincing with pain. As regards the two inch difference in nipple height, she simply tightened the bra **bleep** the good side so tightly it practically sliced my shoulder in two. To be honest I think I will fair better on my own. At one point she blurted out ( and then quickly back tracked) that I had “only” had a lumpectomy, which probably explains the lack of empathy. So it seems good and bad experiences exist on this front.
