Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy Hya everyone,
I havn’t been on for a while but have kept up reading the posts,
I just have a question, has anyone else had a Hysterectomy after suffering breast cancer?
I had my bc ops in Sept and Oct o5, WLE and radiotherapy, I had quite alot of problems on Tamoxifen with periods etc and stopped taking it, Anyway I went to hospital for tests and found very large cyst on left ovary, Consultant advised that at 44yrs age and my history to have total hysterectomy and ovaries out (tah/bso). Which I did 7 weeks ago.
I went to a hospital 30 miles away as the waiting list was shorter, I was not advised on leaving hospital on any hrt alternatives or anything.
I called my BC nurse and explained to her and she did not know I had had Hysterectomy, she advised she would speak to my Onc, and Consultant breast surgeon and get back to me.
I have not heard anything at all and I am getting hot sweats, palpitations, dizziness, insomnia, the list goes on.
I do not want to have to ring her again as I don’t want to be a nuisance, I am just concerned I have been left high and dry.
I am sorry to go on, but would really appreciate if someone maybe has been through this and can advise me, I have read up that it is surgical menopause but will there be alternative remedies for people who have had breast cancer,
Thankyou in advance,
Rowlaine x
Hi Rowlaine,
I had WLE and the works last year and had hysterectomy and ovaries removed in November due to major bleeding, caused by tamoxifen.
I do have flushes but not too bad and I don’t sleep as well as I did, but not sure how much this is due to age etc and how much is specifically related to the bc or the hysterectomy.
I’m now on Arimidex as this is best treatment for post menopause and get some joint pain but again, not a show stopper. Played golf both days at the weekend and work full-time, which includes quite a lot of travel, so doesn’t restrict me really.
When I asked the gynaecologist about the non HRT alternatives, he talked about anti-depressants as the only clinical intervention, but said there were other alternative options which some women found helpful. I don’t have too much faith in those, so haven’t even bothered looking.
This made me realise it was pretty much handle it, or go for the anti-depressants and I’m plodding along fine now and hope I can continue like this.
My advice is you need to see onc again about possible change of medication and you’re not being a nuisance to talk to your bc nurse. But also wanted you to have hope that it should all settle down and be manageable and not really affect you after another few months. Good luck and the most important thing is to make sure you feel as if you’re getting the supprt and advice you need. This helps a lot

Hysterectomy Hya Beth,
Thankyou for replying, it has helped knowing someone else knows how I am feeling.
I too had the major bleeding with Tamoxifen, also really bad joint pain, I do feel better being rid of them.
I see my Consultanat breast surgeon in July but do not have an appt with Onc until January so I will ask him if he can suggest anything.
Can I just ask how long you were off work after your hysterectomy?
I am 7 weeks post op and am now feeling better than I did, but my job is very heavy manually, I clean at the local university and after my 12 weeks off the students will be end of term, we normally work 8-1 but we go on to 8-4.30 when the students leave for summer, we then have to gut all the rooms, about 700, then we have 8 weeks of conferences where all the uni rooms are used over the summer, so I was really apprehensive as to whether I will be fit enough for this as I am not supposed to even hoover yet? So the thought of all the lifting, furniture moving, heavy laundry bags etc and all those flights of stairs (no lifts) is filling me with dread.
Never mind, I am off to Amsterdam in 3 weeks for a long weekend as my youngest daughter lives there, so I think I will leave the worrying till I get back
Thanks again for you advice Beth,
