I have been diagnosed with DCIS the second time in a year, so I am very worried it might happen again.
The surgeon suggests for double mastectomy with implant-based reconstruction (because I have small breasts), but he warned me the implant will be completely different from real breasts. The nurse also said the implant will be cold. I guess everyone will feel differently.
Hi Lee2,
I had a single mastectomy with a silicone implant in November last year. Mine was invasive ductal and lobular, triple positive cancer. I was able to keep my nipple, so she looks pretty similar to her sister. I have small breasts too, so my new boob is a little larger than the original, being a bit skinny, you can see the edge of my implant if you look, but I don’t think anyone who doesn’t know would really notice. I’ve been comfortable wearing a bikini on holiday recently.
I’m happy with the outcome, I have lost the sensation in the new breast and she is quite different to a real breast - she doesn’t move about, but just stays put where she is. It took a little while to get used to. For me, it was important to look as “normal” as possible. I’ve never been aware of her feeling cold, just the same as the rest of me.
My Mum had breast cancer twice and didn’t have a reconstruction either time. Having seen how she looked, I just didn’t want to be flat chested.
Hope this helps, but happy to answer any questions.

Thank you for reaching out. Everyone is different, and may have a different approach. Many people here will have been in this position and I hope that their experiences, like @lmd1’s will help you decide what’s best for you.
I had a mastectomy and implant to replace naughty boob and reduction of healthy boob at the same time to give symmetry, in February. I was 36H now a pert 34D.
I prefer the implant to the reduction ( better shape) although there is limited sensation and it does feel cold for a while after swimming but otherwise if there is a temperature difference I don’t notice it. I’m used to it now and am pleased with the cosmetic result.
