Implant removal

Has anyone on here had an implant removed? I had reconstruction at the time of my mastectomy five years ago, but the implant was badly affected by radiotherapy. It’s been very uncomfortable and I would like it removed, but I’m not sure what my options might be, so I’d be keen to hear from anyone who’s had this done.  Thanks.

Dear High2K,

So pleased you have come to the forum, hopefully I can give you a little bit of reassurance, it’s not unusual to have an implant removed and replaced. I had this done due to infection. I was left flat for a while until the area had healed and then went on to have another reconstruction, However, everybody is different and you may be able to have an immediate reconstruction.

As radiotherapy can cause the breast to go hard and be uncomfortable what  sounds like has happened in your case  I think you should contact your Breast team and they should be give some  advice_ going forward and hopefully make you more comfortable._

Wishing you well going forward, let us know how your getting on

Hi, yes I had my implants exchanged just 23 months after my bilateral masectomy with teardrop implants, my chest area had been radiated 29 years previously for a different cancer. The implant on my right side rotated so we decided on the round implants as if they rotated it wouldn’t notice, unfortunately my left side rejected the implant and pushed it right out of place very high up and towards my shoulder, this happened within about a year, I then had a year wait for a DIEP reconstruction, which happened 4 years after my masectomy. The DIEP has been much more successful, but unfortunately I have just been referred back to the Breast Clinic on fast track for a suspicious area in the flap area, I’m now worried that I will end up having to have that cut out and I have now exhausted all my options.

Have you considered other types of reconstruction using your own tissue? This gives much better results on previously radiated skin.
