Hi everyone, I have to be very careful with this post
I had a mx recently the surgeon who performed my operation is under observation for not following the guidelines set down, that is as much as I am prepared to say, several ladies have been recalled to have put right what he has done wrong…
anyway following my chemo and rads, I am going in for further surgery, on the opposite side, I have a history and need preventative surgery, 44 with children carnt take the risk of it coming back a third time.
He wouldnt perform bi lateral surgery he didnt believe I was in the right frame of mind!!! even though I was then as I am now adament I knew exactly what path I wanted to go on.
the dilemma I have is this should I ask for another surgeon, I am not particularly happy with the results of my surgery although I have been told it is early days and the way it looks may well change given time,
I am not too sure about that, I think it looks worse the more time is passing.
I must say he hasnt done to me what he did to the other ladies, it has been well publicised in the local press, exactly what he had been doing, and it definately wasnt done to me…
Anyway what should I do, I think I will ask for another surgeon, but at the same time wondering whether it is better the devil you know.

Hi Liz, I can’t tell you what to do but I know that if it was me I would ask for another surgeon if I had any concern at all. I had a WLE not and MX but needed a re-ex and had to have another surgeon for that. My team thankfully are all wonderful but even in a small hospital there are three of them so I would do a bit of research behind the scenes to see how many surgeons there are at your hospital and what their specialisms are? x
thanks mary, that was quick,
yes when i saw it in the local press about him i couldnt believe my eyes, in fact i had to read it twice,
i found him to be quite nice and he explained everything to me, although he was quite abrupt with his mannerism.
when i went back for my follow up and told him it felt like someone was rubbing sandpaper on the area he said on i dont think so, i had to come on here and google it on line to find medication for post pain syndrome and get my gp to prescribe amitryptaline which i am still on and touch wood seems to be doing the trick although i still get bad days with the pain.
i am going to ask for another surgeon, my oh thinks i should too, although ultimately it is my decision, i am just a bit wary in case this gets put in my notes and has a bearing on any future surgery if you get what i mean liz
Hi there, I was very unhappy with my first surgeon for different reasons posted elsewhere . Having thought about it I rang the Clinical director of the surgical department and told him I wanted another surgeon or I would make a formal complaint…pretty aggressive strategy I know but I was so upset and angry at the time. Altrnatively you can just ask PALS at your hosp or your BCN to refer you to another surgeon.

Hi Liz,
I would definitely ask for another surgeon if it were me. Also, can I make a suggestion? Take photos of the area that’s been operated on. That way, instead of just an impression of things getting better/worse, you have documentary evidence.

Hi Liz, just had surgery myself and was lucky enough to have a lovely surgeon who did a good job. My view is that an important aspect of treatment and recovery is your mental state. If you feel unhappy with the surgeon, whether it’s because of his past mistakes, his attitude to patients, or his skill level, then that’s not good for you. You have every right to ask for another surgeon, and I think it’s asking a lot to allow this particular person to continue to operate when there’s negative publicity about his practices. Has it been addressed? What has the hospital done about it? I’d try PALS in the first instance, but ask for a different surgeon anyway. Lots of love, and good luck with the next surgery, Lynne xx
hi ladies, thanks for all your posts, i am going to ask for another surgeon, it appears this one has been under observation, and is still operating but within the guidelines now!!!some help to the ladies who have had to be recalled isnt it? anyway i think its hard enough having to get your head round everything else without worrying as to whether your getting a proper job, …
