I read in a book about Live Yogurt and how certain yogurts with live cultures can increase your neutrophills and natural killer cells. I did have too low a blood cell count for a few cycles obviously, but I read the article about live yogurt and tried that (its in the book food your miracle medicine)
Needless to say, by the time I got to my last cycle my count was fine for chemo (higher than it normally was). Whether it was the yogurt or not, or mind over matter, but it worked,
The only yogurt I found with all three cultures they stated in the book was Rachel’s Organic Yogurt which you can buy in most supermarkets.
Well the only thing which eeally affects my white blood count is a good dose of neulasta…mind you I was so depserate last week I started swallowing echinacea.
Do you think Bio activia might do the same as well as its wondrous anti farting properties?
Strange how you’re mentioning this just now. When I was having my chemo 3 wks ago, I sat opposite a lady who said she reckoned her bloods shot up after having plenty of smoothies. Well I went out and bought some along with a few pots of yogurt containing pro and pre biotics. Strangley enough my last two bloods results have been unusually stronger than normal. Now I put it down to the smoothies, but it could have been the yogs. I look forward to seeing the results that others may post.
I was told that I shouldn’t have any live yoghurts etc because of the (slight) risk of infection. I guess it would be a good idea though if you’re waiting for chemo and want to build yourself up. I can’t wait until I’m off the chemo and can enjoy pate and mouldy cheese again as I was told to avoid these sort of things too!! I’m looking forward to a hot summer’s day, kids at school/playroup, sun lounger in the garden, chilled glass of Chablis with french stick and yummy pate, squishy Brie and Blue Shropshire cheese! Ooooh, can’t wait!
Thanks for the tip about acupuncture which I might try as I’ve now been off chemo for 14 or so weeks and my white blood count is going lower and lower which is very worrying. I’m dairy intolerant and therefore cannot have yogurt.
I got a tip at start of chemo, just finished, and all the way through I have had spoon of MANUKA HONEY bit on the pricey side but you can get it in Morrisons and Holland and Barrett. it is about £7.00, but it worked for me as my bloods were always good.
Love
Jill
I was told on no account to eat live yoghurt, but this seems crazy as the bacteria in live yoghurt are the bacteria which live in our guts all the time!!! I didnt argue, but hate missing out on bioyoghurt. Its really hard to find it now without bacteria, only those blinking corner yogs…Lynette
I love Rachel’s Organic yogurts and had no idea they could be a problem! Worrying generally about dairy products as ER+, but only from reading posts, not advice from hospital. I’m still having porridge for breakfast. Due to have mast/recon on Saturday and have to wait for results to find out what further treatment is recommended. Results on Weds of SLN biopsy to know if axilla clearance will be done at the same time.
I got a leaflet given at my pre-chemo, produced by Yorkshire Cancer Care, Palomino, with what not to eat. They have also made me boil all my drinking water! I was told no live yoghurt too, it seems we can get contradictory advice at different hospitals
