Indeterminate MRI

I had an MRI a few weeks ago in order to try and provide a clearer picture ahead of surgery. Yesterday I found out that there was something suspicious in my other breast, which has been classified as “indeterminate”. I now need to wait for an ultrasound and, potentially, a biopsy. How many of you have had indeterminate MRI findings and were they eventually found to be cancerous or benign?

@anon50128939 When I had my MRI, it did reveal more extensive invasive disease in my right breast, but also an additional 2 areas of concern in my left that hadn’t been previously detected. I went on to have an ultrasound on the 2 areas, and I was very relieved that they turned out to be nothing to worry about - a biopsy wasn’t even necessary.
I think MRIs can detect all sorts of little things going on that aren’t necessarily sinister. I hope this is the case for you too. Sending hugs :hugs: xx

Thank you for that. My concern is that I had an ultrasound on my original lump 15 months previously and was told it was normal breast tissue, so they didn’t biopsy it. When it grew, I went back and it turned out to be cancer and they said it should have been biopsied originally. I’m therefore nervous that if nothing shows on an ultrasound with this indeterminate area, they will discount it when it could be missed cancer again.

I can completely understand that, given your circumstances!
I have to admit, it did haunt me for a while- but I had a reduction on my left when I had my mastectomy and reconstruction done on my right, and the tissue removed showed benign changes. I have to trust in that.
If I were you, I’d insist on a biopsy if the ultrasound shows a mass. I’m sure the radiographer will be sympathetic. Take care, try not to worry too much in the meantime- it’s nothing until it’s something xx

Hello, I had this happen twice. After I was first diagnosed, the MRI showed an ‘intermediate’ area in the other breast. It was biopsied and benign. On my MRI before surgery another area was identified on the same breast. The radiographer explained to me that he wouldn’t usually biopsy a lump that looked like that, but because of my history he wanted to rule it out. It turned out to be benign. MRIs are extremely sensitive and they seem to pick up so many benign findings. If you’d feel more comfortable, ask the radiographer to biopsy it during the ultrasound. Hope all goes well for you

Yes same happened to me. Had an MRI to clarify the measurement of the cancer but it also showed something in the other breast. Had an ultrasound and luckily they could see from that that it was several cysts. Try not to panic, apparently my BCN said MRI shows every little thing so hopefully yours will turn out to be harmless too x
