I have had inflammation off and on since my surgery. 9 months after it is still happening. Does anyone else have this issue? Is this normal?
Hi - I’m so sorry to hear this. I have just written on another post about swelling etc but I don’t think it’s lymphodema with me - but inflammation. I had a mastectomy and full node clearance 5 months ago and it’s still really uncomfortable - tight and a a bit of fluid esp after exercise. I did have hemorrhaging, which led to an infection and cellulitus at about 2 months. I have been massaging the area but at night time with no distractions it is difficult to get comfortable. Have your inflammations led to infections? do you know what’s causing the inflammation? It would be good to hear from anyone else experiencing this. A friend of mine who’s 20 years down the line says the pain stays around for a long time!!
I understand the night time issue. I have always been a side sleeper, but with the swelling everything is so tender still. I have been trying to train my body to sleep on my back, but as you mentioned it is very hard to get comfortable. Of course once I fall asleep I end up rolling over onto my side and the pain ends up waking my up.
I booked an appointment with my surgeon and will meet with him Next week. Not sure if I have an infection or what keeps causing it. I had a hematoma and it started draining from my nipple. The bleeding has stopped, but now I am experiencing sharp intense pain in the nipple area. This is on top of the inflammation. Not sure if the two issues are related. Hopefully I will find out soon.
I really hope your surgeon can help you. Do let us know how you get on. Sending support vibes down the line. ![]()
I met with my surgeon and he has booked me for a follow up mammogram on (Sept 11) and has already given me a follow up appointment with him for 12 days later. fingers crossed…
Dear Naioka,
Wishing you lots of luck with your next appointment, fingers crossed for a good outcome.
Health and happiness going forward

Hi Naika
If you don’t mind, please keep us informed of your progress.
My breast has been slightly enlarged since my radio. 8 months ago, with the common “orange peel” appearance. This seemed to get better for a short spell, but the last few weeks it has been tender, and like you uncomfortable and made worse by sleeping on my side. Sometimes it feels like I’ve “pulled a stitch” in my breast, which comes and goes. If it lasts much longer I will have to speak to the nurses.
It’s probably another “part” of the recovery process which feels like taking a step backwards. But I’ve definitely learned during this journey, nothing is straight forward!
Best wishes.
Do contact your nurses or doctor and let them know the issues. This way it is added to your medical chart. When you talk to them they will tell you to make sure your wearing your bra and to apply heat. (even it is in the middle of summer with high temps and humidity) For me this has been hard, as I am also menopausal but it does help. Still waiting to know for sure what is happening, but by this time next month I am hoping to have a few more answers… I definitely will keep in touch. Thank you for touching base.
