injections or surgery to force early menopause - any advice?

Hello all, I’v just been called by my Onc, ahead of my appointment next tues to let me know that I am actually pre-menopausal despite all my past treatment and having no periods. This does’t change my treatment plan but means they need to turn off all my oestrogen ASAP. I wondered if anyone has any experience of the injections or surgery options and tips for managing the hormone decent I am going to be facing over the next few weeks.

xxxLucy

Hi Lucy,

I’m on Zoladex. It’s a small implant injected into my stomach every four weeks by the nurse at my local surgery and stops the ovaries producing oestrogen.

I’ve found it slightly uncomfortable but forget about it within 24 hours. After the first couple of doses, I was a bit up and down emotionally (a bit like PMT) but that seems to have eased off. The other side effects are usually the same as the menopause. I get hot flushes but they don’t last very long and have noticed a few aches and pains that weren’t there before. I do get tired but that could be from reduced lung capacity or the other two drugs I’m on.

It is a bit of a faff scheduling in the appointments, particularly as I also have to have monthly blood tests (at a different time of the mont) so I might ask to have my ovaries removed if the treatment is still working after a year.

Hope that helps,

Marion
