I have just been diagnosed with an intraductal papilloma. Has anyone had one of these removed? if so, can you explain what happens and the after effects?

help and support Hi Lorna

I’m sorry you haven’t had a reply, but this is a new room and not many people know about it yet. If you are still looking for information then you can ring our helpline on 0808 800 6000 or email info-at-breastcancercare.org.uk

Papillary lesion Hi

I had what the doctor called a papillary lesion which may be similar.
This needed to be removed even though benign because I was told they can hold cancer cells and make cancer harder to identify.
as it happened they did a lumpectomy to take out the lump and it was indeed hiding cancer.

The lumpectomy was a needle guided via ultrasound and was relatively painless. I was off work for three days and then all was well again.

Best of luck for your treatment.

hi Lorna, how do they dx intraductal papilloma? I am interested to know because when I read the pathology report of my breast after mastectomy for DCIS, it stated I had multiple intraductal papillomas along with about four other benign conditions. I had no idea, even though I had been going to the breast clinic for sevelal years previously, due to a fibroadenoma. Are there any symptoms?
I know my breast was always very painful but appart from the fib adenoma I assumed there wasn’t anything else wrong with it.
I am just interested as I still have lumps and pain in my remaining breast. I am always worrying about it!!

All the best
Sue

hi lorna I know u posted a while ago but wanted to say that i had an intraductal papilloma removed. Its quite a simply op, u r in and out in one day. I had a micro ductectomy which is where they make a cut around the edges of the nipple and take out the duct that is affected. I found that it was hard tp get any info about it. If u want any further info or any help advice ect do let ,me know. 2 years later my breast is pretty much back to normal but dont be alarmed if it goes very hard and swells afterwards. Its hard to sleep on ur front for a while! Ill be happy to help as there doesnt seem to be many people who have had the condition although i was assured it was quite common. Anyway, all the best

— hi Sue

Mine was dx after I bled/had discharge through my nipple. This was caused by a growth in my duct. This was removed by a day surgery procedure (the cut was nice and neat, along the outer edge of the nipple - the scar barely showed) and left me with four stitches that were removed about 10 days later. The growth showed up on a scan of the breast so they knew what was causing the bleeding.

Hope this answers your question about the dx.

— Hi, thanks for your replies, just thought I would update you all. the’benign’ papilloma was looked at again using a needle guided by ultrasound - obviously a lumpectomy then. This revealed that the lump was cancerous. I have been into hospital two days ago and had the lump removed along with some lymph nodes from under my arm for tests to see if the cancer has spread. I will get the results of this on 21st Feb. Fingers crossed until then.
