I finished rads on Monday and have just starting with the skin splitting under my breast and in my armpit. The nurse gave me some intrasite gel to use if the skin went and like an idiot I forgot to ask how often and if it was instead of aqueous or as well as. Can anyone advise pleas

Hi Hilary
I also had the split skin problem. I was told to apply gel whenever required and NOT to use the Aqueous cream on broken skin.

I was told to put on the intrasite gel every morning and then cover with a gauze swab. This also helped a lot if I had to wear a bra that day.
The split skin recovered and redness disappeared after about a week.Great !

Was told about Intrasite gel by a radiographer and got it prescribed by GP as the hospital didn’t use it. I applied this mornings under a Jelonet gauze dressing covered with a dry pad dressing to wear inside my bra during the day. Night time - just more Intrasite and a baggy cotton t-shirt. (No aqueous cream anywhere near wounds/split skin - risk of infection.) I’m convinced Intrasite made the split skin and blister burns much more bearable. After day 8 post-treatment, recovery was so rapid - I could see the difference between the morning and evening dressing changes. Hang on in there!
My skin split badly during rads,it was agony .My GP suggested blowing a cold hairdryer on the area at least twice a day for 5 mins a time.It worked lie a dream better than the intrasit gel dressings they gave me.I used melolin dressings from the chemist between skin and bra and the were great because they didnt stick.I was told to go braless as much as possible and let the air get to split.Excuse me?I am 63 size 40DD and the idea of going round the house with one boob hoicked in the air and my Tshirt half off was not appealing.My husband is great,he wielded the hair dryer but I’m sure he’d have boggled at the flapping tit!!It all healed up eventually though.Love Valxx

I am still chuckling at the image of a topless Val and her husband armed with the hairdryer!!! How lucky we are that we can still laugh!

Ha, Val, know what you mean… (only with two boobs) And when you’re large how on earth is walking around braless going to help…? Less rubbing, maybe, but it’s not like the air’s going to get under there to circulate…
Apparently I’m to see the doc tomorrow after zapping so maybe I’ll get some of this gel. She wasn’t there today.

Just found this forum on the gel. 4 years (now 2012)later. Have just finished rads yesterday and was given the intrasite gel for very sore surgery site wounds/scar. So far so good, re soothing etc. I was told to apply 2/3 times aday can get at least 3/4 applications out of container. Also, i could use aqueous cream over chest area but avoid where the gel is to be applied.
Have to say Rads and cooking inside and out is a walk in the park comparded to Chemo. 
Re 4 years was in relation to the last thread 2008 
So relieved to read this, I too had my last rad a week ago… Now in agony with burning, broken skin, underarm and all across below breast… District nurses using all sorts of treatment /dressings… Not working, smells awful… After reading your great posts, I’m ringing Dr for Intrasite Gel… Thanks everyone…
Sarah - I am glad you posted, I would probably not have come across this thread otherwise. Other ladies on the March 2017 radiotherapy thread have had skin problems but they have been given other stuff for it (Hydrogel and Polymem dressings)
I am still in the middle of radiotherapy at the moment (2 more full zaps to go, then 8 boosters). I have been given a prescription for Intrasite and Instillagel to use instead of aqueous cream if my skin starts breaking down during treatment, and something else called Flamazine (apparently it’s got silver in it) to be used afterwards. Meanwhile I am drinking loads and plastering on the aqueous cream to the extent that I am running out, and must buy another bucket tomorrow!
My oncologist also advised no dressings. I am not massive (34C) so flapping boob isn’t a problem (already going bra-less round the house), but I don’t like the idea of no dressings, because the stuff is going to get all over my clothes. Anyome got any tips on where to get suitable dressings that will stay on (other than GP)?
Sarah - I got the stuff from the pharmacy this afternoon and discovered that the Intrasite gel is the same as Hydragel (it says that on the box). Hope you have managed to get some from your GP and that it has helped.
Intrastate Gel amazing used morning and night it really does help heal xxx
Welshcake - thanks, that’s good to know. I haven’t yet had to use it, but I’m up to 20/23 now, and I think I might have to start soon.
