Just been diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer, can anyone say what the usual treatment is for this?
Hi H,
Sorry to hear you’ve been diagnosed, but there’s loads of support here.
Essentially, the treatment options are the same as for invasive ductal bc & would usually include surgery (the type of surgery required would depend on what’s needed to remove the bc) radiotherapy & hormone treatment if your bc is er+ (ie oestrogen positive). Chemotherapy maybe indicated depending on the grade, size or any lymph node involvement. Your team will devise the best plan for you to get it sorted out.
It all becomes a lot clearer when your treatment plan is finalised & you know where you’re going with it all. Do look at the main BCC site here, which has an explanation of anything you need to know at this stage, alternatively do ring the helpline here if you need to talk things through.
Do come back to chat, vent or ask anything you need to.

Hello
Sorry that you have been diagnosed. I was given the same news on February 27 last year. For me the treatment was a MRI scan, mastectomy then hormone therapy. It all depends on your results after the operation if anything else is required. Just had first year mammogram results last week.
lf you do have a mastectomy it’s not as bad as you fear.
Good Luck. Will look out for you when l next come on the forum.

Hello,
I have been diagnosed recently and haved planned surgery on 8th March. It is all an anxious time, especially as this type of breast cancer does not necessarily show on scans. I was relieved once the results of scans showed no disease in other parts of the body and now feel that I can at least start with the process of dealing with the situation but the unknown is still a bit scary. I am determined to do all I can, with the help of others, to get over this. I have great faith in my Breast Surgeon and will try to not think to much about the ifs and buts for the future.
Hope it all goes well for you, let me know how you get on.
Best wishes,
Linda x
Hello H - stressful time for you ,10 cm of snow certainly not helpful - the results of your MRI scan may make the radiotherapy issue irrelevant - if you have to have a mastectomy due to the size or number of your tumours you prob won’t need radiotherapy anyway .There may well be ways to position your arm so that radiotherapy will be an option but a few days will make no difference to your treatment / prognosis so if your appointment doesn’t go ahead as frustrating as it is try not too get too stressed - they will fit all the pieces of the jigsaw together and get the best possible plan for you .Jill.
Hi Linda,
Have you been to pre assessment clinic?
The surgeon said he had the MRI results, which show the cancer to be three times bigger than on mammogram and ultra sound ! it also showed ’ something going on in my other breast’ so after a long wait in the waiting room I had an ultra sound on my right breast, the doctor only found a cyst which she aspirated with a large needle no local anaesthetic but it was not as bad as the biopsies. I then waited to see the surgeon again, he asked me to choose between lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy or mastectomy, I asked him if he was in my situation which would he choose, he looked sowhat shocked and could not answer.
My shoulder has been terrible since yesterdays possitioning trial at radiotherapy, and I told the surgeon I did not know if I would last out a full five days of being in that possition, however my arm was not supported yesterday so with support the pain may not be as bad, I would not have wanted to have my arm in that possition today.
I have signed for the lumpectomy, then the cancer is removed, if I do not tolerate the radiotherapy then the surgeon will do a mastectomy. The surgeon has said that I may need a second operation if the lump has not got surficiant margin of good cells, apparently with invasive lobular cancer it is very difficult to determine good cells from cancer cells.
Pre assesment is booked for 15 th and surgery on 22nd being at hospital by 07.30 in the morning.
I asked to see the cancer but the surgeon said he leaves that to the radiologists! when I asked them they said they are not allowed to show patients so I still do not know what it looks like.
Hope you are not sorry you asked how today went, thank you for asking, I was at the hospital for three and a half hours, I was already worn out from yesterday, day off tomorrow thankfully.
Hope you have planned somthing tomorrow to take your mind off Thursday.
Kindest regards
Heather.
