Hello.
New here and just wanted to pass something by you.
Was out shopping with my mum this week, she is 73 and she was trying on some bras.
She was concerned that her nipple showed through on one side so was choosing the padded t-shirt ones. Anyway I havent really seen mumsies boobs for a while…and noticed that one nipple had gone…! I asked her…wheres your nipple? She said…it just dissappeared about 3 years ago. She does have mammograms and the girl did say have you always had an inverted nipple and mumsie said…oh yes for ages…but she hasnt really always had one. If mum had said its new
Anyway…what should I encourage her to do?.
Should she see her GP even though she has the mammo’s?
Not sure when her last one was.
Thanks lots.
Hi
I would encourage her to go if she hasn’t always had a shy nipple, not all cancers can be found on a mammogram and so it might be best to ask for an ultra-sound too, although as you get older your breasts are less dense so it probably would have something up.
It is more than likely nothing but until you know that for sure you’re bound to be worried.
Best of luck. x
I would definitely encourage your mum to get it checked out. It’s likely to be nothing, but in my case was indicative of Paget’s disease. I’m so glad this had happened as I also had underlying early stage cancer (DCIS). As I understand it, they are separate conditions, but often go hand in hand. Without the inverted nipple (and in my case some discharge), I wouldn’t have had any symptoms but count my lucky stars every day that I did as it meant I caught my cancer early. 3 months later I’ve had some surgery and the all-clear. It’s been a hard 3 months, but it all could have been so much worse.
Please don’t let this worry you - all I’m saying is it is a possible symptom, but could nothing (eg blocked ducts etc). For the sake of a trip to the doctor and a referral for a quick checkup, peace of mind is everything.
