Is evening primrose oil oestrogenic?
Is evening primrose oil oestrogenic? I’ve just bought some Eye q fish and evening primrose oil capsules for the kids and thought I’d take some too to help my brain function!!
I have an idea in the back of my mind that evening primrose oil may contain oestrogens which i must steer clear of. Does it?
Also while I’m on this subject does anyone have any info about drinking wine. I’ve reduced my intake to about 4 units a week. but still feel guilty every time I have a glass. Do you have any info about whether red or white is safer with regard to the oestrogenic effects wine has on breast tissue. I vaguely recall reading that wine did have some oestrogenic side effects.
Thanks for any info.
Frances

Evening Primrose Oil I am taking Arimidex and so have the same concern.
I asked my oncologist about Evening Primrose Oil and she said it would be alright and she even recommends it to patients.
I have started taking it but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference so far.
However, I am going to seek a second opinion on its safety when I have my next appointment in November.
I stopped taking Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng because of the same worry when the oncologist said she thought they were oestrogenic.
I will just have to worry about my brain function instead.
Regarding alcohol. According to the internet. ‘Women’s Wiki’ states -
“Alcohol is another risk factor for the development of breast cancer. Women who drink half a glass of wine every day have 6% increased risk of developing breast cancer where as women who drink two drinks or more daily may have 37% increased chance of developing breast cancer.”
How true this is I don’t know.
I can’t drink anyway as I am diabetic so it doesn’t affect me.
However, I have made sure that my four daughters all know what Womens Wiki said.
Evening primrose oil does NOT contain phytoestrogens -so fine to take.
evening primrose oil My surgeon suggested evening primrose oil for hot flushes when I was on Tamoxifen. I don’t know if it made any difference to those but I remember reading that GLA (evening primrose supplies this) increased the efficacy of some anti cancer drugs. So I looked for some info on the BBC news archive.

Sounds good to me!
Alcohol. I, too would be interested to know what others think about drinking alcohol - weather it effects your chanches of long term survival, and if theres a difference between its effects on hormone neg and hormone pos tumours.
do you know , my breast nurse told me to stop taking evening primrose when i had been dx. marvelous, now it seems i can take it again. would be great if it stops the flushes.

Evening Primrose Oil On my first session of chemo, they asked if I was taking any herbal remedies. I said that I have been taking EPO for approx 4 years for relief of periods. The pharmasist suggested I stopped taking it while she checked it out. This week I had a phone message from the pharmasist which read “Evening Primrose Oil may stimulate growth of cancer cells - do not take”. I certainly wouldn’t take it again!
