Is it growing

strong text hello team, can you please offer me some advice. I first went to the doctors on 20May and was diagnosed on 24 June. Since then I’ve had an MRI and now they want me to wait until 19th July for ultrasound and the potentially biopsies. Apart from the not knowing which is unbearable, could it be growing and getting worse. Should be waiting this long for an ultrasound? My oncologist made an appointment for me to see him again on 17th but I would have even have had my scan. I’m thinking about getting a private scan. Can you advise please… thank you

Hello jnra

It sounds like a difficult time for you since your diagnosis and it is understandable that you feel anxious whist waiting for further tests to enable your treatment to be planned and started. The days and weeks immediately after a diagnosis can be particularly emotional and feel overwhelming.

Having these tests will help your team to offer you the best treatment options for your diagnosis.

As you are worried about the dates offered for your ultrasound scan and possible biopsies, we would suggest for you to contact your treatment team or breast nurse to talk about your concerns. You could ask if the ultrasound scan can be any sooner and talk about your worries around how this may affect your cancer. You could also check that your appointment with the oncologist will still be worthwhile if you have not had the ultrasound.

If you’re unable to resolve a concern, you may want to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). You can find your nearest PALS office on the NHS website.

This is a confidential service for patients, their families, and carers. They can help resolve concerns related to health matters, explain, and handle complaints procedures and use feedback to help influence change. PALS work with staff, managers, and if relevant, external organisations to provide support and advice to people concerned about the care they are receiving.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. To do this complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes
