Is this normal?

I went to a doctor appointment regarding a lump in my breast. And was told im to be referred to the breast clinic. From what ive read the appointment takes around a fortnight onwards depending on referral type. My appointment for the clinic came today (its for the day after tomorrow). Kind of scared the bejeezuz out of me as i thought i had at least a fortnight to get my fears out of me. Is it normal for an appointment to come so soon?
Im a major wimp. And although i believe its a cyst. I still thought i would have time to get my head around it all :S x

Hi there try not to worry too much, easier said than done I know. The NICE guidelines are that if there is any question it could be cancer you are seen within two weeks. Don’t panic because you are being seen so quickly it will mean they have a space in the clinic on that day.

Good luck and remember 90% of lumps are benign.

Xx

Try not to worry about it. Being seen quickly is a good thing, they must have had a cancellation for it to come through so quickly. I was seen within 7 days of going to see my doctor.

And, as stargazerlily has said, 9 out of 10 lumps are nothing to worry about.

Please come back and tell us your good news when you have been to the clinic.

Ahh yes i never thought of cancellations. I think its a cyst, i know most lumps turn out benign. I just keep having little what if’s going through my head. I have two little girls 5 & 6 and panic about them thinking of the worst scenario. Suppose id best not think of it until im told its a cyst.
Will they have to do that needle thingy even if it is a cyst?
Thanks for replying

Hi there,
if it is a cyst they can probably drain it there and then, this is called a fine needle aspiration - they numb your boob first with local (same stuff as dentists use) and then use a long needle to pierce the cyst and draw off the gunk. They may well send it off for analysis just to be on the safe side.

if - and it’s a big if - they think it is something more sinister, they may do a fine needle biopsy (effectively as above) to get a quick look at the cells. In this case they will also do something called a core biopsy which takes samples of the lump which they can examine and test to decide how best to treat it. The core biopsy reuslts take a few days.

Hold on to what your heart/gut says it is, and to the fact that 90% of breast lumps are benign. Don’t waste your energy on the ‘what ifs’. Try to keep busy and focussed on good things.

Thanks again folks xxx

The nurse did an ultrasound and a fine needle aspiration, They said it was a fibroadenema. Today i have a new appointment for in 10 days and im being referred to consultant in Breast Surgery- Under 30 Years Old… How come? I thought that was it that it was a fibroadnema and was all done now.

Hi there,
well, firstly that sounds like a good result - fibroadenoma are benign conditions. They are probably just being careful and making sure someone who is an expert in this has a look for you, to confirm the best way forward and to ensure that you are given the best treatment. There are other people on here who can give you better replies, but I would try to stay positive and see this as getting the best care they can offer you.

Btw we aren’t menat to name medics on here, so don’t be too surprised if the mods edit your post.

Take care

Oops sorry, ( i spelt the name incorrectly). And yes makes sense, i think im just being over worried  x

yes this is normal. If you are having appointment and checkup fast this is good for you.
