Itching at mastectomy site

I’ve recently started to experience a continuous itchy sensation around the centre of my mastectomy scar which persists morning, noon, and night and is driving me crackers. Its just over 2 years since my mastectomy flat closure so no idea why I am experiencing this now. There is no rash or lumps around the site and I moisturise and massage with castor oil regularly. I had an ultrasound of the area back in the spring and all was well at that time. The skin is very thin above my ribs in this area. Any idea what might be going on?

Hi Tulip29,

Thanks for posting.

Changes in the skin around or on scars are not unusual. Sometimes redness or itching can occur when the skin is thin and stretched for example.

However, it’s always important to get any new changes checked out. Although you had an ultrasound in the spring, we’d always suggest you contact your team to let them know of this new change so it can be checked out. They can then also offer specific advice on how to manage the itching.
