Back in 2013 and 2014 I had hadfields procedure for duct ectasia. Since June/ July this year I have had an itch in my right breast just under and on the areola. I have been treated with creams but nothing has worked. In recent weeks the itch has intensified and (excuse the detail) whilst getting lucky with my other half the nipple would not come out. Which lead me to make a drs appointment. I have always had an inverted nipple but it would always come out. The nipple looks completely different from the right and to look at the breasts they no longer look symmetrical. Last week I went to see my gp and she has referred me back to the breast clinic. I have large dense breasts so they feel very lumpy anyway but my gp felt a smaller lump which since my appointment I’ve felt too. My appointment at the breast clinic is on the 15th November.
I didn’t realise just having an annoying itchy breast could be a symptom of breast cancer and I am worrying because of how long I’ve had the itch and now the other changes too.
Has anyone had anything similar? Thanks in advance x
Hi helen,
Technically, any breast change can be a cancer symptom, but fortunately, mostly it turns out not to be.
Anyway, you’ve done all you need to do & it’s good you’ve been referred to get it properly checked out.
All the best for the 15th & if you want to, do let us know how you get on.

I normally am vigilant when it comes to my health so feel a bit frustrated with myself for ignoring things. It will probably be nothing to worry about. I am trying to switch off but with the itch being almost persistent it’s really difficult. It’s driving me crazy! Xx
Hi Ann, I had my appointment yesterday. I’ve been booked in for an ultra sound and mamagram on Monday as they didn’t have time to do it yesterday.
The consultant said he isn’t too concerned because he couldn’t feel the lump but he needs to investigate more because he doesn’t know why my nipple is being pulled and he found it difficult to manipulate out. He said if the results are clear he wants to follow up in 2 to 3 months. He didn’t say anything about the itch xx
We’re both having investigations on Monday for ‘funny nipples’ - mine is actually my areola; it’s slightly creased underneath.
The anxiety for waiting is horrible.
Hi Chippet, it is worrying, I’ve thrown myself into work this weekend to take my mind off things. Hope everything goes well tomorrow. What time is your appointment? Xx
Glad your appointment went well. I’m still feeling anxious.
I had my scans and then was told i needed to sit and wait as I couldn’t go just in case they needed to any other tests. There were others going in and free to leave. I got speaking to a lady who went in for her scans after me, was told to wait, then they came out said she could go and have her an appointment for Monday. I asked what was happening after about an hour and a half of waiting and they came back to me about 20 mins later and said I was free to go. Today I received a call from the breast unit, I need to go back to see the consultant tomorrow, so I still don’t know. Appointment is at 10.45 xx
Hi, all was ok in the end. It’s scar tissue from the hadfields procedure that is pulling my nipple in. So feeling relieved. The consultant said it will probably happen to the other side as well but still to get the change checked. He gave me advice on what to do to help with the itching and to prevent infection xx
