Itchy Nipple problem.........

Hello everyone!

I have a question or two here. The last few days (4) I have had an itchy nipple. Feels like tickling deep inside the nipple. There is nothing of note on the outside - no change in colour, position or look. There is no rash either…no heat or red patches. Yet the nipple feels like I have used sandpaper over it if I try to relieve the itching through my clothing! I had my last child 14 years ago and I did breastfeed for a while, but out of frustration I squeezed my nipple and a few tiny droplets on a non smelly coloured liquid came out. I am now wondering if I should be booking an appointment with the GP? Has anyone else suffered with an itchy nipple without it being anything sinister?

I am aware there are other conditions such as blocked ducts, mastitis etc…but I have had none of them so far and none of the symptoms that go with these. I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago due to pre-cancerous cells so don’t really get many hormonal changes. In fact my ‘cycles’ each month of sore breasts and PMT are very rare (mostly appearing between 4-6 months in between). Is this likely to be nothing more than the ‘change’ coming early? This sensation is beginning to drive me mad and I even found myself waking in the night to scratch at it! Only thing that seems to relieve it temporarily is to ‘twiddle’ it like a radio knob much to my husbands amusement…he asked if I got Radio 2 yet!!!

I’m sorry if this sound very silly to you all but having had 6 relatives die from cancer related conditions (2 Aunties from breast cancer), 2 great nieces and a great nephew with Leukemia and various cancerous lumps and bumps cut off my sisters’ and brother I get a bit ‘panicky’ about things like this.

Hi
Please go and see your GP. I had a cracked nipple and delayed a couple of months. By the time I had biopsy etc it worsened and ended up with mastectomy, imeediate recon and 2 lymph nodes invovled, hence chemo. If I’d gone sooner(had cracked nipple previously and it was OK) I might have saved myself some treatment.

Hopefully yours will be OK but better be on the safe side.

Goodluck
Marilyn X

Thanks Marilynleah but it isn’t cracked at all…do you still think I should go? Apart from the itching underneath there is absolutely nothing to see?

go to the doc to be refered, if you lost fluid at the nipple was it blood, but any leakage should be looked at
be safe sweetie

Hello Phoenix

Definitely go to your GP and ask to be referred. Itching can be a sign of Paget’s Disease. It probably isn’t anything but you must get it checked out just in case.

Hi again
Sorry about confusion, we my nipple was cracked, should also have said that itching and funny feeling inside were also there.
Get it checked in case. I’m sure they prefer telling people it’s nothing serious rather than it’s cancer.

PhoenixOnTheWrekin - I can not tell you how relieved I was to read your post. I have the EXACT same symptoms. Has anything come from your visit to the dr? I live in Thailand and have talked to the dr. here many times about this but they keep trying to give me topical creams and treat me with antibiotics. Neither help…they don’t understand that the itching comes from the inside.

I have had this problem for almost a year now. I’ve been on antibiotics several times and no one seems to know what I’m talking about. It’s gotten really embarassing when I have to pinch my nipple in public…and at night it gets worse. Please email me if you have received any new information about our symptoms… Thank you!
