IT'S BACK!!!

Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with breast cancer Aug '05 when I was 29. I had a mastectomy with ANC (2 nodes involved), 6 x FEC, 1 Yr Herceptin & a delayed reconstruction.
I last saw my onc a month ago & she told me I would only need yearly checks from now on.
On the 11th March I found a lump on the reconstructed breast a little higher than the mastectomy scar. I went to the doctors the next day & he refered me to the hospital for an ultrasound & fna. I have just got the results back today & it was my worse fear…it’s back. I have to have the lump removed on 9th April & wait 2 weeks later to find out what treatment I will need.
I was just wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience & what treatment you had. I’m petrified of going through chemo again. I was under the impression if I had a mastectomy, I couldn’t get cancer in the same breast.
Thanks in advance Lisa x

Hiya Lisa, I was diagnosed last year and I do feel for you. Its what we all dread. As I understand it though whether its a recurrence or newby its treatable. Its not what you want to hear though is it!? I’m sending you lots of love, let us know how you go! Love Julie.

Hi Lisa

I’m 28 and I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago - I too have had a mastectomy with ANC (4 nodes involved) so I can fully relate to your situation. I know I’m new to all this - but stay strong. You’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Lots of Love

Hi Lisa
Iwas diagnosed in 1999, dcis, had a mastectomy but was not offered any other treatment, maybe because there was no lymph node involvement. However the cancer returned in 2005 on the same side along the scar line. Ithen had 4 fec, 4 tax, 15 rads and on Herceptin indefinitely. I am older than you, 55 now but I think I know how you must be feeling, I too was absolutely devastated. Try and keep positive,
best wishes, Jan.

Hi Lisa
How are you.
Just letting you know that we are all thinking of you.

I too had a mastectomy and recon and have now found a lumpy bit too went back to hospital and am now waiting for another MRI ,only got diagnosed lt aug op oct and recon Jan 08 couldnt be back that soon surely ? any ways we are all in this together and I have a fantastic consultant ,bless him so it will all be fine whatever the outcome .

Lisa

I have to say it is frightening that the lump was either missed, or grew fast if you had had an examination just 1 mth before.

I suppose it is a warning to us all to continue self examination regularly.

I do hope things go well for you.

Irene

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks for your kind words.

I had the lump removed along with some of the muscle it was attached to. I went to see my breast care nurse for the results on Friday. The lump is a recurrance of the previous cancer. There are suspicious areas in the glands running up my chest towards my neck. She said they can’t be sure whether they are tumors or just inflamation. I have to have another mastectomy & they will know more then. I will also be having radiotherapy. I asked if I would need chemo & she said “I would say at this point that it is unlikely”, so fingers crossed. My bone scan came back clear & my ct abdominal scan showed a couple of cysts on my liver that apparently lots of people have. She said not to worry about them but she will arrange an ultrasound just to be on the safe side. She seemed very optimistic & said that everything seems localised & treatable. The main thing is that it doesn’t seem to have spread…(breathes a sigh of relief, phew) I have to see my surgeon on Wednesday so hopefully he will have a date for surgery.

Back to the waiting game!!!

Finished my treatment 4 weeks ago now just on Zoladex and Tamoxifen. Thinking of you and sending you hugs and loads of love. Be strong you got through it once you can do it again. This is the one thing we all dread.

Hi Lisa
How is things going?

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your kind replies.
I had a mastectomy & LD reconstruction 3 weeks ago. I went for my results yesterday & was told I would need Taxotere & more Herceptin & radiotherapy. I wasn’t really prepared for the chemo or herceptin as I was told it would be unlikely I would need it. Apparently there was an affected lymph node which I can’t understand as I was supposed to have had them all removed during my 1st mastectomy in 2005. I am seeing my onc on Thurs so I will know more then. Has anyone else had herceptin twice? Just wondering if there is any point when it doesn’t seem to have worked 1st time round.

lisa im so sorry you have had this news…
just to let you know my thoughts are with you …

stay strong

hi lisa
yes i have herceptin twice, and although it slowed my cancer down it was still coming back so now i am on trial capecitabine and xeloda seems to be working as it disappeared again, mine is skin mets so i can see when it comes back . Keep positive and give everything a go it may work for you .
love mel x

Hi Lisa
I know how you feel as I,m going through the same myself. It is such a shock to be told the cancer has returned!
I have started my Herceptin and will have chemo and Herceptin on Monday. Not sure if I will have to have radiotherapy.
At least we know what to expect re chemo this time around… and if like me, your hair will regrow like a forest!
Don,t feel too daunted by the whole thing - you were strong enough before so you can do it again.
I,m sending you positive energy and cyber hugs.
