I've not been offered Tamoxifen - does anyone know why?

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me? I was very happy to find out a few days ago that my lymph nodes were clear after having a mastectomy a couple of weeks ago for high-grade DCIS. However, the surgeon said that I didn’t need any other treatment like Tamoxifen and I was surprised at this. I had assumed I would go on it to prevent recurrence as I know two women (one in their late 40’s, one in their early 60’s - I am 42) who had the same diagnosis as me and are on Tamoxifen for 5 years.
I don’t WANT to go on Tamoxifen, but then I really don’t want this thing to return.

Can anyone advise - especially if they have ‘just’ had high-grade DCIS with mastectomy and no spread to lymph nodes?

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Hi

cancerbackup.org.uk/Treatments/Hormonaltherapies/Individualhormonaltherapies/Tamoxifen

You may find the above link helpful. Tamoxifen is usually only given when breast cancer is ‘oestrogen-receptor-positive’. I am guessing that your tumour wasn’t; your oncologist will confirm this for you.

Best wishes

Hi,

I think Tamoxifen is only given to ladies who have hormone receptive cancers as RMW advised above.

I have not been given Tamoxifen or Herceptin as my cancer is triple negative which means that it is not receptive to hormones so further treatment will not benefit me.
Like you I have no further treatment to endure.

I hope this helps?

Regards

Julie
