Jane Plant diet - the new, friendly & supportive thread

Rusty - re the organic, I do buy mostly organic fruit, veg, meat, fish, milk also flour- all the fresh stuff but wondered really about all the tinned stuff, purees in tubes, soy sauce, ketchup etc. Once they have been through the process of being canned etc I wonder if the chemical residue would still be there? Whenever I have read any articles about organic food they only ever seem to mention fresh fruit & veg!!

xwelcomex - thanks for the link - first time I have seen anything about a diet for triple negs

Hi I found this site really helpful. It may not be any help to those following an extreme diet.I found it very informative and it has some good recipies too.Norberta I think it’s the smoking process thats not so good in smoked mackerel

Best wishes mel xx

Thanks so much xwelcomex for that link - loads of reading to get into. I’ve seen a couple articles linked from that site before, but hadn’t realised how much else there was.

It’s the best explanation I’ve seen so far for the soy controversy (read the genistein link), and it is soooooo complicated - but it does suggest why a vegetarian and no dairy diet with soya seems to be protective for Asian women.

Disappointing that avocados are on the avoid list though (:

Whilst the link posted by xwelcomex seems to contain useful information, it appears that it is an American website and I don’t believe that all the recommendations would be the same over here, due to the different food production methods in the US, especially meat and dairy. Just something to bear in mind.

Hi. I was at Penny Brohn last week ( excellent by the way) and they said to avoid all smoked food. They also said to avoid all BBQ and anything cooked on an open flame. They did however say that avocados were fine especially for anyone wanting to put on weight.

Hi everybody, finally got the nerve up to post on this lovely thread after been put off by the other negative one. Chris Woollams books are very good on diet and he has a great website called canceractive. I’m very careful with my diet now(not a complete saint tho I have occasional blips!)eat mainly organic,no dairy, V limited chicken and lamb, no processed foods, no sugar, no salt, v limited alcohol, loads of fruit, veg, pulses etc. I’ve been doing this since diagnosis last november and have lost nearly 2 stones. I’m now at the low end of my healthy weight range.

Purpleprincess - I’m TN too. Have you seen Jennifer Griffin’s blog. She’s an american newsreader, TN too, that is also doing a very healthy diet. Apparently we benefit from a low fat diet, under 33g a day even of the good fats. 30mins of exercise every day is beneficial too, it doesn’t have to be strenuous a power walk will do the trick.

Zo.

Is anyone going to be at Penny Brohn in October?

Hi Zo
Yes I had read about having a low fat diet for TN’s was not sure of the amount though! Like you I have lost quite a bit of weight but do not want to lose any more - difficult isn’t it when you are trying to keep the fat down.
Not read Jennifer Griffin’s blog - will take a look

The food for cancer website is brill - I’m working my way through it slowly and learning loads - it goes into much more detail than I’ve seen before, and summarises a huge amount of research in one place. Highly recommended.

Finty & Norberte

I’ll be interested to see what nutrition ideas you have after going to Penny Brohn as I had a one-to-one with their consultant this week. Certainly food for thought and useful. I’m still processing it all and waiting for her report/advice in writing as it was a lot to absorb in 2 hours!

Norberte If you have a taste for very dark chocolate it’s very good for you. It has antioxidants and is also a good source of seratonin which helps stimulate your brain into deep sleep at night. This is ideal to satisfy those late night cravings for choccy!!
