I was refused BRCA gene testing by my hospital on the grounds that they thought that I wasn’t at risk.
I do not recall if their eligibility questionnaire asked if I am of Jewish descent.
I am of Jewish descent and I have today heard that there is a significantly higher chance of carrying the BRCA gene because I am.
There is currently a scheme being run by the NHS to test Jewish people for the gene. If you go to the website jewishbrca.org you can register with them and hopefully get a test.
I have done so.
If you think I’ve posted this in the wrong section of the forum please re-post elsewhere.
Hi you could also post it in this section ?
Thank you! Xx
Hi @jayesse My hospital also didn’t pick this up and I happened to read about it. When I raised it at a consultation (this was post ops and pre further treatments) they fast tracked genetic testing for me. Ashkenazi jews have a MUCH higher risk of carrying brca 2 (I think). You absolutely should have a test with your medical team who should also offer you genetic counselling. X
Hello @minib
Were you found to have the gene?
I have emailed my team and will see what they come back with and update this thread.
Xx
No, my test was negative. One thing to celebrate on the cancer journey.
From (rusty) memory, even if you only have one Jewish grandparent, you have the right to be tested. Incidence of carrying the brca2 gene mutation is still relatively low overall but something like 6 times higher for those of Ashkenazi descent and twice as high for Sephardic descent compared to the general population.
Good luck xx
Hello @minib
My breast cancer nurse has now sent me the genetic testing questionnaire that they use. I have to fill it in and send it back. She said they only test for one of the two brac genes. I’ll get the hospital one done but am also waiting for the NHS testing kit to come through which tests for 2 brac gene mutations.
I’m glad you were found not to have it. Xx
