Hi, I am due to start chemotherapy on 4th July. I have two small children (a nearly 2 and a nearly 3 yr old). I am worried how I will be able to care for them. I thankfully have a lot of family support but I’m terrible at asking for help and I am fiercely independent. I know the fatigue will/ may stop my in my tracks but I still want to mother my babies!!! I’ve been told that chemo stays in sweat and saliva so hugs and kisses for my babies are going to be tricky.
Hi Monamin, as long as you don’t lick them too much your children will be fine with usual hugs and kisses! You will be at risk of infection from them in week 2. Everyone’s experience is different, and it depends on your regime. I am on FEC-T. I’ve had one cycle last Tuesday, and to be honest today is the first day I have felt normal. Don’t be brave. Accept any and all help. Let someone else do the cooking and shopping at least for the first week. Good luck with you treatment. One step to being cancer free! Kx
And welcome to the forum. I’ve just started a chemo thread for July, so perhaps you’d like to pop over to that where there will be other ladies starting with you.
We all like to be independent, but This will probably be a time when you need to sit back and take any help offered! The first week is the difficult part because you will feel tired, so just prepare for that week. Week 2 you do need to watch out for infections, so don’t arrange any play dates for your kids then!
I’m sure others will be along shortly to give you lots of tips and advice. I had my chemo in 2016, so please ask if you have any questions.
Hi ktk, I will reign in my licking ??? good to know that I can still hug and kiss my babies. I’m having FEC-T also. This whole thing is so overwhelming.
Good to hear that you are feeling more back to normal long may that continue!!!
