Jumping the gun? So worried about my Mum. Not sure where to post this but decided to use here where I usually end up!
I was 42 when diagnosed in Jan 06. Had skin sparing left side mast. with immediate recon using Lat. Dorsi. and implant. Alergic to Tamoxifen so on monthly Zoladex.
My Aunt, my Mum’s sister, had lumpectomy and Tamoxifen some years ago now all clear (whatever that means!)
My Mum is 78 this year and has had severe discomfort in both breasts for months. Her GP sent her for chest x-rays months ago and they showed nothing. He said he cannot request a mammogram due to her age but will request an appt. for her with a consultant. I am so worried that she may have BC. I know it is unlikley due to her age and the fact she has been menopausal for about 20 years but I am going mad with worry. I know she is too but she won’t say so for fear of upsetting me.

So sorry to hear about your mum. Please do help her to insist she sees a breast consultant- her GP is quite wrong that she can’t have a mammogram because of her age.

Really hope there is an innocent explanation for your mum’s symptoms but no you are not jumping the gun at all.

It sounds like you are feeling very worried about your Mum, which is understandable under the circumstances. Maybe it would help to talk to someone in confidence on our free phone helpline 0808 800 6000.
Everyone on the helpline either has experience of breast cancer or is a breast cancer nurse. The team comes from a variety of back grounds so callers get to talk to someone who has an understanding of their situation.
The helpline is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 2pm Saturday.

Thank you for the info, Jane & Moderator. Thank you both. In those dark moments I think I don’t know how I will cope if Mum has got BC but in the brighter moments and in truth I know I will cope, as will my Mum. I have just spoken to Mum and without alarming her advised her of the above, which she says she already knew! Mum’s they know everything! She has just spoken to her GP’s receptionist who is going to chase the consultant as the GP sent the letter on the 27 Feb. Mum is picking up a repeat presciption Weds and will speak to the receptionist again then. I have told Mum that if they get no-where I will start chasing for her, after all I know (and have been treated by) both of the consultants at the hospital!
Like they say it is not what you know but who! Staying as positive as I can. L’ll let you know what happens. Thanks again.
