Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Ta Bazza x need to start properly prepping

Thanks Anna, well at least we can still say balls eh??!!!

Hello all, I’d like your thoughts on something I’ve been mulling over today. So after the operation we get results a few weeks later, now how worried or anxious do I need to feel about them? The biopsy has already told me the grade and I know it’s in my lymph area by the breast as the pet scan showed this. Also the way my BCN was talking last week she seemed to think the results wouldn’t tell them anything they didn’t already know and was already saying that the plan would be to have chemo from January. I wonder whether I’m just thinking too much about it all and thinking too far ahead xx

Only thing you are missing is HER status, there can’t really be anything else you don’t know ,occasionally they revise grade upwards. what do you know do far?

Hi Sissy, I think pretty much what Jill said and your BCN thinks you shouldnt find out anything you dont already know apart from maybe her2. xx i wont tell you to not worry as we all know that doesnt help but I will say you are right to come on here and talk to us about things xx big hugs

Jen x

And to make you laugh I have just been bought by a dear friend a “winge” and a stretchy headband to clip it to…could have bought me booze while I still can but nope a rather fetching shade of ginger(im blonde at the mo) “winge” …she thought itd do under hats… Which it will but its bloomin scary on its own…its sat on the coffee table lurking near the fruit bowl…

I wonder that too, Sarah, I would pay for my own PET scan if I thought it could save me having node clearance! I do worry about spread too, but I think these scans must be expensive and maybe they don’t always see everything?

Sissy, I worried about my results after my first surgery and had to wait over nearly three weeks to get them. I’m surprised you don’t have you ER and HER2 status from your biopsy, they sometimes take a bit longer to get than the other results, I got told I had cancer and that it was grade 2 a week after the biopsy, but didn’t get the hormone status until I saw Mr C the week after that. Maybe phone the BCN to see if they have them now?

I got my stage at the appointment and was told my sentinel node was positive. We talked about future treatment and they should be able to give you a more accurate diagnosis of the tumour etc. I will be on repeat soon, surgery and then the wait for the appointment. On that topic, I had may letter today I was pleased to see that, all being well,  I will be having my surgery next Friday, a week sooner than expected!

Hope everyone is doing ok today.

Oh yes, I know it’s invasive ductal carcinoma, stage 2, hormone positive (very positive apparently, my score is 8/8) HER negative. Had discussed egg harvesting with my BCN but she was very reluctant due to the hormones I’d have to take to stimulate the eggs. Of all the breast cancers to have the BCN said mine was the most common. The way they are talking seems like it’s already sorted what I’m going to have happen to me treatment wise, e.g surgery, chemo, radio, then reconstruction a year after that (should I choose to have it). I know they’ll work out the grading once they’ve removed it all, but in some ways I’d rather not know…does that sound silly or odd?

Sarah. I had a pet/ct scan a few weeks ago as we already knew it was in one of my lymph nodes. I was told that the are very very sensitive and can pick up any other bad stuff in the rest of your body. They also show if there’s any spread to lymph nodes throughout he rest of your body. I had no spread and my surgeon wasn’t surprised by my results, he said that it was in the area he already knew about, my right breast and some nodes under right arm. I would be very surprised if my sentinel isn’t positive. Mr C is just going to take it all out.

On a lighter note, I went and got my hair done today. Have gone for something a bit wilder than normal as I imagine that by the end of January I’ll be hairless. Sissy xx

Hi sissy and Amanda. I just wonder if they did them first. In the long run it would stop all that awful waiting and could save money on lots if surgery and treatment. I think something needs to change for waiting times and answers. It’s total torturexxxxxxxxxx

Good luck with your first T treatment Sarah,if only it was a nice T ,like afternoon tea with scones and cake and a glass of Prosseco !!!

I didn’t realise that a PET scan could pick up node involvement. In that case it does seem odd not to do that at the start. I’m sure they are expensive but as you say Sarah all the other operations and treatments must be too so surely it could be balanced out for patients who they find via the scan perhaps don’t need more expensive/extensive treatment.

Just off for pre-FEC2 bloods. Good luck today Sarah, thinking of you.

Hi Jill - hope all well with you. How’s work going?

Hope everyone else has a good day. xxxx

Yes, PET scan radioactive. They inject it into you with glucose through cannula then leave it an hour before so that it can work its way all trouble your cells etc. I kept asking why I was having that and not mri, the BCN said because of me being younger was main reason as my cells and organs would be able to take the radiation more.

I did ask about the cost of it with the people running it. I was in one of those mobile truck units having mine, was operated by a private health company. I dread to think how much they charge for nhs for their services. Sissy xx

Results of my CT are in and no spread! Could have kissed the oncologist  now out with hubby for a full english to celebrate, chemo starts 9th November 3 rounds EC 12 weekly Tax, plus herceptin. Mr Barman aka Oncolgist said he fully expects the b**ger to shrink and me to get rid of it fully  we are celebrating good news in the bad this weekend.

I think all patients should get scans and in a set pattern every single one I work for the NHS I know what they cost but I reckon it would save money in the end

Hugs to all
Jen xx

That’s great news Jen!

My husband recently had an MRI on his knee, privately at a BMI hospital and it cost £565! He can use the NHS and wait for treatment like I have had to, from now on!

I was diagnosed with a grade 2 invasive ductal cancer, nodes not biopsied and things did change after surgery and the path results, so it does happen sometimes, but as I said, I had no node biopsy (just the lump) and just mammograms and ultrasound before. After surgery, I had an MRI but this was just of the breasts and wouldn’t show any further node involvement, apart for it not being set up to look at anything but the breasts, an MRI isn’t going to show microscopic mets in the nodes anyway. Surgery and the histology is what gives them more certainty, although in for me; that hasn’t been the case…yet, maybe next time!

I will be anxious to know what they find after the mx and node clearance, but it’s all on the steps towards further treatment. I will be keen to get onto the adjuvant therapies (yes, even chemo) in order to try and kick this thing into touch.

Sissy, I think it is very normal to feel you might not want to know about the grade, but they could be giving you good news, too!

Amanda, just re-read one of your messages, so next Friday is your op day now? I’m in on Thursday and will be getting kicked out on the Friday, maybe our paths will cross?! Sissy xx

Yes, Sissy they might; King’s Unit? In Friday, out Saturday. I was first up last time but I don’t expect to be this time, so maybe I’ll try and find you while I’m waiting…if they let me lose!
