Kidney function test before each chemo (FEC) cycle?

Hi!

My Mum is worried as her kidney function is not great. I think it is at 42 at the moment, which I think is quite low. She is really worried about the effects of the FEC chemo on her kidneys and wonders if it is the norm to have a blood test or something similar to check the kidneys before each cycle?
Mum had her first FEC 2 weeks ago and has been doing really well. The hairloss has just started which has really knocked her for six. She can’t even bear to discuss it. My dad is brill though and is supporting her every step of the way.
Anyhoooo, if anyone can put mum’s mind at rest regarding the kidney situation, I would be really grateful!

Lots of love

Hi Lisa,

I had a little google around and I think you will find this article very helpful

cancerhelp.org.uk/about-cancer/cancer-questions/why-does-a-high-creatinine-stop-me-having-chemo.

It is one of the few that explains the whole kidney function/chemotherapy problems very clearly.

Thanks Dawn. The article is really useful. I will pass it on to my mum xxxx

Hi Lisa, they do check my kidney function before every cycle which i believe to be the norm along with liver, bloods etc. Not sure they would give her chemo if it was to low. I had 3rd FEC on
thurs & was waiting for my kidney & liver results to come through before they would go ahead.
Hope shes ok & she’s got you & your Dad to look after her.

Best wishes & hope all future treatment goes well.

Thank you so much Fitz. That will really put my mum’s mind at rest. Both of her brothers have kidney damage so she has been worried sick.

My mum is too scared to come on here herself, so I come here to do her delving for her.

Thank you all for your support

Loads of love
