Large soft lump in armpit

Hi, I have cording in my armpit which is very visible and pulls down as far as my elbow when I stretch. At the base of this, in my armpit, is a large soft swelling. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m wondering if I should get it checked out.

Hi celie1

Thank you for posting.

It’s understandable to worry when you notice a new symptom and you are wondering whether to get it checked. It’s not possible to say what is causing the large swelling in your armpit although cording and previous surgery can cause changes to this area. You may want to contact your breast care nurse to get it checked.

Stretching and massaging the cord can improve your symptoms and you may need physiotherapy to help with this. You’ll sometimes be advised to take pain relief before doing the stretches as they may feel uncomfortable. Many physiotherapists suggest that cording can take months to fully heal, but that with physiotherapy and daily stretches, most cases of cording will resolve.
