LD reconstruction & implant

When does a Latissimus Dorsi reconstruction and implant start to feel like part of you, rather than something that’s just stuck on?

Hi Finnster, how long ago was it that you had the surgery? I know exactly what you mean but, from what I’ve understood from some of the threads on this forum, it can take some time for it to feel like a part of you. I’m beginning to think that I wished I’d opted for a TRAM/DIEP reconstruction, as I gather they can feel more lifelike but this certainly wasn’t something that even entered my mind at the time when I was still reeling from the shock of being diagnosed. Its not just how it feels physically but also the psychological acceptance of it too that is proving difficult - but, as with most things, I’m hoping time (if I have it) will help me to adjust.

I understand that there are occasions where the reconstruction can fail and that tissue can form around the implant to make it feel quite hard - perhaps you could ask your surgeon if the sensation you are experiencing is normal?

Sorry I can’t be much help but I hope you get more replies soon.
