Leaking implant

Hello
I had a bi lateral mastectomy and reconstruction with silicon implants 8 years ago. One of the implants is leaking into my lymph nodes.

I am very concerned and want them both removed but also worried about what next options!

Going flat is scary and so is reconstruction via TUG flap surgery! Is there anyone in a similar dilemma who could chat?

Hello wendy10

Thanks for your question. It’s understandable that you’re scared about having both breast implants removed with, or without, further breast reconstruction.

I wonder if you’re in touch with a breast care nurse who you could share your concerns with. It’s also important to fully discuss your options with a reconstructive breast surgeon, which it sounds like you have done.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0114 263 6490 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.

Flat Friends is a charity who support those who have mastectomy surgery, which you may find helpful. Our information on bras and breast prosthesis could be useful if you decide against having a reconstruction.

You could also speak to your GP about how you’re feeling. They may be able to refer you for some talking therapies

The British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeons (BAPRAS) have some useful information and questions that you may find helpful.

Keeping Abreast is an organisation which provides information and support for those offered breast reconstruction.
