Left breast pain, swollen axillary node, BI-RADS 2 ultrasound

26F, 2 years postpartum, and still breastfeeding. For about a month I’ve had persistent discomfort in my left breast with intermittent sharp pains, plus a swollen, tender lymph node in the left armpit. The breast feels heavier than usual, and I’ve developed more prominent blue veins and a small area of flat, non-blanching petechiae. There’s occasional itching in the breast/armpit area.

I previously had mastitis in this same breast while breastfeeding. This lymph node has swelled once before in the past year. I am also anemic and have been experiencing significant fatigue (hematologist appointment at the end of the month).

I had a targeted breast and axilla ultrasound. Report: BI-RADS 2. No suspicious breast findings. Left axillary lymph node measured 18×20×10 mm with preserved fatty hilum and no abnormal cortical thickening. Impression was “benign lymph node, no sonographic evidence of malignancy.” My OBGYN examined my breasts twice and did not think mastitis was likely. She wants to follow up after a few more weeks of ibuprofen daily.

Despite the BI-RADS 2 ultrasound, the symptoms have persisted and the area remains uncomfortable. I feel uneasy. Can anyone offer their thoughts or similar experiences? Wishing the best to you all!

Hi @calico. Welcome to the forum!

We are so sorry to hear this. It must be such a worrying time for you waiting.

I would really recommend reaching out to our nurses with this question. Sometimes it can just be helpful to talk things through. You can reach them on our free helpline 0808 800 6000, and you can call them as many times as you want or need.

We also have a forum thread which our nurse’s respond on too if that’s easier for you:

I truly hope you are able to get some answers soon, and that you are able to find comfort and support in the meantime.

Thinking of you,
Chloe
