Letrozole or tamoxifen?

Have been advised by consultant that I can choose between these options for my hormone therapy. I’m menopausal (due to having to stop HRT since diagnosis and not having any ovaries.). Does anyone have any suggestions about what things I should consider when deciding which to take?

Hello @Rainbow54

I sort of had a choice: I was 50 and when asked where I was with regards to menopause my answer was well my periods are less frequent and lighter and I’m not pregnant . The (male) breast cancer surgeon requested a blood test which apparently said I was post menopausal and prescribed Letrozole. However I then asked my (female) oncologist if this was correct as I had had a period in the previous 12 months and she said no you should go on Tamoxifen (I wasn’t too happy about being put on Letrozole as I didn’t honestly think I was post menopausal and had always understood that “the” blood test wasn’t conclusive) my main concern was the joint pain particularly as my oncologist told me it was the most common side effect and there apparently isn’t much you can do or take to counter it as it isn’t like arthritis

I have therefore been on Tamoxifen for 12 months without too many problems and was told at my first annual review I might be put on Letrozole at some point in the next 4 years but I don’t have to switch if I don’t want to which I was very relieved to hear.
I hope this is helpful
