Letrozole - what supplement and vitimins are not recommended

Hi. I am starting Letrozole next week. Finding it hard to clarify what herbal teas, (drink herbal teas daily) supplements to avoid while on this medication. Where can I find details?? I I have osteoporosis, so I know its a bone thinner. I need to know how much calcium and Vit D to increase to. I know no grapefruit, yes or no flax seed? I am allergic to fish so compensate with flax seed in my morning smoothie. No soy? Vitamin C, K, Zinc, etc. Thank you so much in advance

Hi - I have been on Letrozole for a couple of months now and have ā€˜Adcal’ on my prescription too so that is definitely not contraindicated. I take a K2 supplement with my Adcal to help absorption and my Vitamin D level has increased a lot so that appears to be working. Presumably you also have Zolendric acid infusions for your osteoporosis- I had my first one last week. I’m sure you could also ask your consultant for advice. I think also weight bearing exercise is of equal importance and your bone density will be monitored so you could ask for advice then. They will probably suggest including calcium rich foods in your diet. Hope this is is some help. Best wishes x

PS Flax seeds are good I think. Also walnuts. Don’t think herbal teas can do any harm

@kcancer My Onc said to take a list in of what I’d like to take & he would have the pharmacist take a look so might be worth asking too?

I’m a little hesitant on flaxseed after years of eating it daily as there is still some debate on plant oestrogens & how they may interact if your cancer was hormone positive. I’ve made it easier on myself by just saying I don’t need to eat it anymore rather than taking a side in an extensive & still inconclusive debate-for me it’s not worth the risk. I’ll happily be necking a capful of olive oil instead I think to get my essential fatty acids in. Walnuts a great call. Also green leafy veg with a little glass of orange juice will be a great iron support & that’s Vit C too. I’m increasingly taking the view on eating well & wide variety of things rather than supplements & I was a devotee for many years. Tumeric for example I think is out on letrozole so using it in food rather than pills. No more collagen powder to keep me young looking given debate on that for cancer too. Sprinkling pumpkin & sunflower seeds on everything x

I am interested to know if you were told to take the K2 supplement . I am on letrozole and take vitamin D . I have asked my doctor and pharmacist if it is better to take vitamin D with K2 added as I have read online that it helps the bones but neither knew and could not help me.

I wasn’t told to do this but during Covid there was lots of information about how K2 helps with D3 and lots of supplements contain them together so I choose the lowest dose I could find to take with my Adcal and my vitamin D level has increased since December so I’m going to continue

hi - read this with interest as am on letrozole for last 3 months - starting ribociclib soon. Have recently started adding ground flaxseed to my porridge (thinking good for lowering cholesterol which is on the rise since letrozole) - didnt even consider it might be something to consider use of until I saw your post! I found the below online - so much conflicting advice! I will ask oncology - bit thank you for raising my awareness.

x

It is generally considered safe to eat moderate amounts of ground flaxseed (1–2 tablespoons daily) while taking letrozole. While flaxseed contains phytoestrogens, studies suggest it does not increase breast cancer risk and may offer protective, antioxidant, and anti-cancer benefits, often acting as an anti-estrogen when natural estrogen levels are low.

You’re overthinking the ā€œsuperfoodsā€ way too hard—flax seed and soy aren’t going to tank your Letrozole. Since you’ve already got osteoporosis, quit playing guessing games with Vit D and Zinc on the internet and demand a specific dosage plan from your oncologist before you start ā€œthinningā€ anything else.
