Leuprorelin - heavy bleeding

I had my first leuprorelin injection just under two weeks ago, and I had my first period in 390 days. It was very heavy, and I felt lightheaded. Please advise.

Hi pinklady2

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable you’re seeking advice having had your first dose of leuprorelin followed by your first period for 390 days.

Some breast cancers use oestrogen in the body to help them grow. These are known as oestrogen receptor positive or ER-positive breast cancers. Before the menopause, oestrogen is mainly produced in the ovaries. Leuprorelin ‘switches off’ this production by interfering with hormone signals from the brain that control how the ovaries work. You don’t say why you are having leuprorelin. It may be used on its own or alongside other treatments for breast cancer.

Some people do have vaginal bleeding during early treatment and this often settles. If it doesn’t, or as in your case the bleeding was heavy and made you feel lightheaded, we would suggest you discuss this further with your treatment team. You can contact your breast care nurse to arrange this.
