Life after mastectomy research study for African and Afro-Caribbean women

Hi,

We are conducting a study at Birkbeck University exploring African and Afro-Caribbean’s women’s experience of breast cancer and how these women make decisions about breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Currently, very little is known about African and Afro-Caribbean women’s experiences of breast cancer, mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

We are looking for African and Afro-Caribbean women who have had a mastectomy after breast cancer (within the last 5 years). We would like to speak to women who made the decision to have a breast reconstruction and to women who decided not to have a reconstruction. We would like to invite you to take part in an interview either at Birkbeck University in Central London or over the telephone. The interview would last approximately one hour and we would give a voucher for £20 to thank you for your time.

We would also be interested in understanding the role of partners and family in this decision-making process and so would like to hear from partners and family of African and Afro-Caribbean women who have had a mastectomy. Again, this interview would last approximately one hour and a voucher for £15 would be given to individuals completing the interview.

If you have further questions or would like to take part in this research study, please contact Beth Grunfeld (e.grunfeld@bbk.ac.uk) 020 7631 6332, or Gemma Hutton (g.hutton@bbk.ac.uk) for further information.

Thank you for your time,
