I’m really sick of every day finding out something else that I should or should not be doing. Don’t drink milk, don’t eat dairy, don’t eat red meat, don’t drink white wine or bottled water, don’t use Bio Oil, deodourant, aloe vera with alcohol etc etc ad infinitum!
Personally I’m too busy with treatment and generally living day to day without having extra worries. They don’t tell you any of this stuff at the hospital (except the deodourant thing). Just like they don’t tell you that you shouldn’t be paying for prescriptions as a cancer patient.
Maybe someone should compile a list cos I’m sure I’m not the only one who is confused. I haven’t stopped doing any of the above and sometimes I feel quite guilty of that fact. Am I the only one not heeding all the warnings? Should I be worried? Does that mean my cancer will come back? Should I be living on a diet of organic lettuce in order to reach old age?
Help!
Hi Buzzy I totally understand & yes there are so many do this dont do that but I think its just how some including myself choose to do some things, you’ve no need to feel guilty if your happy with what your doing for you then that is the best thing, the only time anything is a problem is when we dont feel happy doing something, listening to our own bodies & intuition is all we can do … being HAPPY with whatever we do is all we can ask of ourselves.
your right when going through treatment you need your energy to get through it day by day ONE DAY AT A TIME. As for not telling us about these things at the hospitals your right they dont because there is too much conflicting advice on all the do’s & don’ts they stick to what they know.
Carry on doing as you are doing get through your treatment with whatever helps you anything else can wait until you feel like it … Id forget the DO’S & DON’T lists ive seen enough of them these past months to last a life time & even they are conflicting
Hi Buzzy
I feel exactly the same as you - never heard of not drinking milk and i consume loads of the stuff, now i feel really guilty about it and wondering if i drink it will it come back - feel so guilty. My oncologists never told me anything about diet in what to avoid so i just carried on as normal - now i am really worried xx
DO-carry on enjoying the things that give you pleasure
-throw pork pie at your husband if it makes you feel better(insidejoke
-eat and drink whatever suits your lifestyle and makes you feel good
-be aware of sensible health guidlines, but not a slave to them
DONT
beat yourself up about being down occasionally
tell anyone they are wrong for how they choose to eat/drink
blame yourself for getting cancer–its a lottery
forget to give OH a big hug and if there is no OH hug yourself
Please dont stress over it there are alot of women who get through & still around years later who say they never changed anything these are women diag 20 odd years ago when none of the research had come about
I found the whole diagnosis, surgery, treatment etc difficult enough to cope with so, within reason, I am carrying on doing what I always did. If other peope have decided to research diet and change their lifestyle then that is fine and right for them. It is just not for me and, happily, I do not feel worried or guilty about it.
Yep, the chemo advice is to eat similar to a pregnancy diet in avoiding the risk of infection because blood counts can go down during chemo. That’s specifically because of low bloods and the risk of infection though, not to do with recurrence, so doesn’t really apply generally.
I haven’t been given any dietary advice at all, other than to lose excess weight, but after chemo side-effects have subsided, don’t bother being picky about calories during chemo. And that’s all the advice I’ve had.
Snap CM - I haven’t been given any dietry advice and have been happily eating prawns, brie, and soft boiled eggs! With just one chemo to go I don’t intend to change.
Re the whole diet thing, as long as I think I’m eating a reasonably healthy balanced diet, I’m not going to worry too much. Life is a risk - certain risk reducing precautions are worth it, others just take all the fun away!
They only thing I was told to avoid was Shellfish and Soya… I think the state some of us get into while getting chemo is finding somethings we can eat without that horrible metal taste. I just ate what I could
i still cant eat beef and white bread they both taste revolting and I finished chemo end of April
Right now I am just trying to eat a healthier diet but if I really want something now and then I will have it.
