liver mets - pain

Can anyone reassure me. I finished chemo for liver mets in January. Yesterday, I developed a pain in the right side of my chest/abdomen and a pain in my right shoulder. I seem to remember this could be a symptom of an enlarged liver. Does anyone know if this is true. The info I’ve found on the internet is vague. Can anyone tell me if this is true and what I should do.
Regards
Kelley

Hi Kelley,

Breast Cancer Care would always recommend that you seek guidance from your own healthcare team if you have any concerns about your symptoms.

Please do also remember that BCC’s confidential helpline is here for you, offering support and information. Calls to the helpline are free, lines open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturday 9am - 2pm, telephone 0808 800 6000.

I am also attaching a link to BCC factsheet called secondary breast cancer in the liver, which I hope will be helpful:

I’m sure you will also get a lot of support from the other users of this site

Kind regards,
Kate, BCC Facilitator

Hi Kelley

Both those can be a symptom of an enlarged liver, though in January this year my liver was very swollen and my liver function poor and I had no pain though I could feel my liver under my ribcage which i hadn’t been able to previously.

My advice would be if the pain hasn’t subsided in the next 48 hours to make an appointment to see you onc to get blood tests etc done to see if your liver function is normal.

Don’t know what chemo you were having but my liver problems in January were just 3 months after finishing taxotere, I was on aromasin but obviously this wasn’t working.

I am now nearing the end of my 3rd cycle of Xeloda and my liver function is back to normal!

Hope you get this resolved, and hopefully it is nothing to do with the liver mets!

hi kelley
i was diagnosed with liver mets dec 09, the reason it was discovered was pain in my right shoulder which is usually deferred pain, i had a pain in my lower back, i would get it checked out and hopefully it is not related

Hi kelley
It is horrible when you start to worry and you must get yourself checked but I too have had pains in my side (that was gall stones) and pains in my shoulder (from hunching up one shoulder with my heavy shoulder bag). On both occasions my fears were unfounded but none the less worrying and distressing for all that.

Put your mind at rest - get yourself looked at.
All the best

Hi Kelley, please get yourself checked out asap. I was diagnosed with liver and spine mets in Jan this year after 18 cancer free years. I was initially told it was gallstones so I had to wait weeks and weeks for an ultrasound scan and it turned out to be the liver. I’m now on weekly Taxotere and feel a lot better, so please don’t put it off, best to know what’s what and get some treatment. Take care and really hope all is well with you and everyone else. Love, Dianne x x x

Thanks everyone,
I had a CT scan and bloods taken today. I’ll see onc on Thursday. I only feel pain now when I breath heavily or knock myself so hopefully it is just a pulled muscle or something but I’m glad I’ve had it checked out. Now just the wait and fingers crossed.
Regards
Kelley

Glad to hear that you’ve had the scan and tests done, Kelley. Here’s hoping it is indeed a pulled muscle - good luck for next Thursday.
