Long haul flights
Long haul flights Hi,
I’m currently on Zoladex and Tamoxifen and has been under treatment for 6 months. I’m planning a trip to go home to M’sia, which means flight up to 13hours.
I’m worried about blood clots and DVT as well as other complications. Should I be worried, and is there anything I can do to prevent DVT - apart from keeping active? Has anyone else in the similar situation taken a long haul flight?
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Gracey.
Hi Gracey,
Yes, I went to India at Christmas, just a month after finishing treatment. Am currently on tamoxifen. I have always had a tendency to faint on long haul flights and am always a little worried about DVT. So I always drink loads of water before and during the flight - I don’t indulge in any alcohol or eat large meal during flight, and if feel my blood sugar level is dipping I suck on boiled sweets. This time I also invested in some flight socks - which did help to stop my ankles swelling and stopped the horrible restless sensation I sometimes get in my legs. Also tried to keep moving legs and getting up and down to go to the toilet - must be a joy to sit next to!!!
Hope this helps and hope you have a great holiday.

Clexin? Hi,
Thanks for the advice. Will keep that in mind.
Went to the GP today and he contacted the oncology doctor. They came back saying I need Clexin injection - supposed to be a blood thinning medication that I inject myself with before the flight.
Has anyone had Clexin before? Any side effects? It’s supposed to be a new protocol.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Gracey.
For Gracey Hi Gracey,
I can’t advise on the Clexin injection unfortunately but hopefully other women will be able to tell you.
Just wanted to let you know that I’m on Tamoxifen and Zoladex too and I went on a 10 hour flight to Tobago a few weeks ago and I was fine. Basically, like the other girls advised you, I’d suggest drinking loads of water, avoid alcohol (if poss!) and limit your intake of caffeine. Also do the leg exercises and pop to the toilet/move around when you can. Hope this helps.
Have a fantastic holiday,
BethXX
My onc, here in France, told me to wear flight socks even if a short 45 min flight, because i am on tamoxifen.
