Lumpectomy Today

Hi. I just had a lumpectomy this morning to remove my 0.7mm ES/PR+ HER2- IDC Stage 1A tumor. The surgeon said all went well and he would be surprised if the pathology doesn’t show clean/clear margins. I was home from the surgery by 10 AM. My follow-up is on June 19. I have a couple of questions for this group:
(1) should I schedule a visit with the radiologist or oncologist now or later?
(2) should I switch to my own sports bra because the two they gave me and put on feel like they are cutting off my circulation?
(3) should I be worried about next steps or relieved that the worst of it is over?
Thanks,
Lauren

Hello there well done for getting through your surgery and home quickly and with good news - it does feel good when they are confident enough to tell you that they have got good margins. Just asking are you in the UK and are you NHS or private ? If you are NHS then radiotherapy will be scheduled for you if that’s part of your plan - but I imagine it would be . There seems to be a bit of variation regionally in the UK as to who sees an Oncologist and who doesn’t though the ones that don’t will likely have input from an Oncologist during their MDT meetings.

If you’re private or abroad then honestly I would wait until you’ve had your appointment on 19th June to do anything just to make sure everything is ok with your wound etc. and discuss it with your surgeon.

I wasn’t given a bra by the hospital / BCNs I bought my own post- surgery bras from M+S but for the first couple of days I wore a crop top with a secret support camisole over the top then went into the post- surgery bras. It is important to have plenty of support but if you really can’t get on with the bras you have been given right now then you could try your sports bra .
Hope you continue to recover nicely xx

Hi. Thank you for your response. I am in the U.S. The radio therapy will not be scheduled for me. I will likely switch to just the one provided bra for overnight and then switch to my own sports bras after I shower tomorrow.

A little concerned about whether pathology shows any lymphatic involvement and whether oncologist might recommend chemo, but feeling optimistic overall…especially after radiation oncologist said she might very well recommend no radiation in a case mine. She will look at the pathology before we meet.

Thanks again.

I’m not quite sure how to he system works but it sounds as though other treatments are dependent on your results so until those come back I would think an a

Accidentally pressed send too soon again !

Was going to say that it would seem sensible to wait until your results are back before you have more appointments otherwise they won’t be able to determine further treatments or go through everything with you.

In response to the question about how to feel - I was relieved mine was out especially as I’d been told at the time that my SNB was clear and they were fairly confident that they got it all. it was also my second procedure and I was very happy when 2 weeks later the provisional results were confirmed - good margins and node negative . If you can take a little time and enjoy that it’s good and you deserve that - but you’re right it’s hard to fully relax when the journey isn’t over and you have to then refocus on the next goal. xx
