Lumpectomy tomorow

Hi everyone, my mammogram last November showed an irregular shaped lump in right breast but they couldn’t feel it. biopsy confirmed 18mm grade 3, no visible sign in lymph nodes. I’m having a lumpectomy tomorrow, with lymph node biopsy, the nurse said it may be possible the surgeon can tunnel up to the nodes, rather than a separate incision, has anyone had it done like this? Obviously I am nervous of the op but the dreaded word chemo was mentioned as I’m triple negative, so I’m terrified of side effects, as I’m in good health right now. My brother inlaw has finished his chemo/radiotherapy (esophageal cancer, they cant operate, so treatment was intense) with no side effect other than being tired. I had DCIS on the left, 10 years ago with op and radiotherapy, the nurse said this one is unrelated because of the time between. Still cant believe this is happening.

Sorry you are going through this, it’s a rubbish hand to be dealt.

I had a lumpectomy and the nodes were removed from the same incision. I did have therapeutic mammoplasty though. The wound went from my nipple to just below my armpit.

I have just finished chemo and whilst it’s not a walk in the park, it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. I felt a bit yak and tired but hardly any nausea at all and certainly no sickness.

Best of luck for your op

Hi. I only had 1 lymph node removed when I had my lumpectomy. I only had 1 incision. I know it’s difficult but try not to jump to far ahead with possible treatment. Just take each stage at a time. I’m sure it will all go well for you tomorrow.

Hi @cruising,

Firstly, we are so sorry to hear your diagnosis and what you’re going through, I’m so glad that you’ve found the forum and I hope you find it a helpful and supportive place.

It’s completely understandable that you’d be feeling anxious heading into tomorrow - the shock of a diagnosis is enough, never mind then facing treatment and surgery. As I said, the forum is a very friendly place so I hope that there are users that will offer their experience and advice, but if in the mean time you need to speak to someone, or talk things through, you can reach our nurses on our free helpline on 0808 800 6000.

There’s a lot to get your head around, so do reach out if you need to

I had a lumpectomy and level 1 and 2 lymph node clearance yesterday and am now resting after the op wiaiting for the test results to see if need chemo (have a 23mm lump in the left and one positive node from the biopsy so it could go either way depending on other nodes). It’s such alot to get your head around but for now I’d take things one day at a time and be kind to yourself after the op, letting other people help as much as possible. Will be thinking of you tomorrow.
