Lumpectomy / wide local incision

Hi,

I had wle 4 months ago and am currently having chemo, to be followed by radio.

I’ve got a query:

  1. I had blue die injected by the side of my nipple. The surgeon said it would disappear within 3 months. 4 months on it is vivid blue. Anyone else had/got this?

I know it’s minor, compared to my other worries but…

Jo

Hi Jo,
worry not…I was told it could take up to a year to go, but 8 months on I can now see it has gone.I still have a little bit of seroma left round my nipple, though, my surgeon seemed a little surprised it was still there, but didn’t say OMG! or anything, so I guess it’s OK. Will check with someone if it hasn’t gone in a few more weeks.

Mine is the same and I was also told it would gradually disappear. However when I asked one of the radiologists She said that sometimes it never goes . Just what we need a constant reminder! I know it is not important in the big scheme of things but still a bit disconcerting don’t you think.

Hi jo

Had my op in April, boob still blue, but faded. Dx

My best friend had this Op 3 years before me, so she had told me about the dye remaining for ages, otherwise I would have found it a bit disconcerting, I must admit. Has anyone else had a seroma? The first I realised there was something not right was when I was going up the field to feed the chickens a week or so post Op, and I could hear a weird noise coming from my stomach, (I thought), like a hot water bottle sloshing about!!
Lol!

It’s taken about a month for the seroma under my arm to go down to a smallish lump that lets me put my arm at my side. I’ve wound up having 2 ops (smallish as these things go), 1st the WLE plus sentinal node biopsy and then a lymph node clearance. After the 1st op, my breast and the adjacent area was pretty swollen, more so than when I had just the WLE on the other side a couple of years ago.

The 2nd op drained things, but it all filled up again in a couple of days, and this time the BCN told me to come back to the clinic rather than going to my GP to have the dressings removed (I’m lucky & live near the hospital). She drained over 400 ml of fluid and told me to come back as often as necessary. I went back about 6 times, a couple of times a week, and each time until the last about 400 ml (around half a pint) was drained. Initially, the fluid from my breast was draining into the seroma as well.

I was told to keep taking ibuprofen and I found that ice packs and cold packs helped with the discomfort, although with the recent weather, I was doing this under layers of jumpers and shawls! Oh, and I’m still clutching a cushion at night, just to relieve the pressure. The exercises seem to help as well.

And yes, I’ve still got a turquoise patch from the first op back in October.

I was shocked, and then laughed out loud (sick sense of humour) that they’re trying to turn us all into Smurfs!

Not had my op yet but at least I’ve been warned about this “interesting” side-effect. Best of luck with losing your blueness.

You may not go blue at all, I didn’t, so not sure what happened to the blue dye but I like to think that it just blended in with my blue blood!

Good try, Gwendolyn, but I reckon you passed all of it, instead of just some of it like the rest of us!Lol!

Wow, thanks for all the replies ladies! I know it’s superficial worrying about it, it’s not like I ever went topless before so certainly wouldn’t now, but… just wanted to know.

I had quite a big seroma after my lumpectomy. I hadn’t been warned about it because they don’t expect it to happen with WLE apparently. They drained 250mls off which I thought was a lot until I heard someone I know say they had 650 drained off.

After the seroma had been drained I develped a big haematoma, which has turned lumpy but at least has filled my empty balloon boob out!
