lumpectomy....

hi all - had my lumpectomy and node sampling last wednesday so still early days yet but I’m still so sore…I suppose I’d psyched myself up for it to be a small op and with that small amounts of pain! I think I did too much the day after really and didn’t rest about enough, its so hard with the kids as you want them to see you up and about and appearing normal. I managed till I had a bad night on friday and didn’t sleep well and then come the morning I was wincing about with sharp pain - felt like it was in the skin and going right across my boob area, clothes made it worse but there’s only so long you can stand there naked supporting a poorly boob with one hand - if I press it gently then it eases the pain for some strange reason…I haven’t been a martyr either regarding painrelief and have been taking them regularly esp since friday night as before that I was getting a bit lax about needing them. Ended up taken the dressings off completely and the skin looked irritated and red so I wondered if I was having a mild reaction to the dressing material as after that it eased quite a lot. No redness or hardness or temp which might mean infection so I have decided I’m officially a wimp after all ;0) Mary

it’s ok to be a wimp. I was in agony after my partial mastectomy although i got told I’d have no pain - the nurse told me dubiously that the only thing they could give me was suppositories but as far as I was concerned I would have tried anything so i said get them up there.

I didn’t feel quite so keen when the nurse decided I would have to have another of these when back on the Ward and not in severe pain again.

Thank God it’s all over now. I did end up with an infection five days after surgery so hope you don’t have this. Don’t overdo things,

I’d say it’s pretty normal Mary, you aren’t being a wimp. I know a lot of people say there’s little pain, but I found the recovery a longish haul and pretty painful. I was using painkillers for a good couple of weeks in all. I was surprised at how long it took, as I was expecting a couple of weeks and I’d be fully fit again. I did have quite a large portion of my breast removed in the lumpectomy, though, and a node clearance rather than sampling so I found my arm took a good while to sort itself out too.

I had a heamatoma in my breast - can you hear any sloshing like a half full hot water bottle coming from it? If so you might have a heamatoma or seroma and should probably get it checked out. That can, I know from experience, cause swelling and pain. It does sound as if you might have been allergic to the dressings too though, which won’t help.

Hang on in there, it’ll get better!

Hi kittencat

Sorry you are having probs with your op site. I’m due for the same op soon n dreading it, Although the waiting so long is the hard bit.I don’t do pain (although I had two kids!!!)Luckily my body heals quick so hopefully I will be OK, have you had the results back yet? If not, did they say how long.
