Luscious lashes and bushy brows!

Has anybody tried serums that claim to promote eyelash and eyebrow growth, and what were your results like please? I have just finished herceptin and had my last chemo just over a year ago, but my eyebrows are much sparser than before chemo, as are my eyelashes.

Hi Mazzalou,
My daughter bought me some of the eyelash serum, but I only tried it once, because I have had lots of trouble with sore eyes since chemo (apparantly not connected, but I dont believe it, never had trouble before)
What I have had, is eyebrow tattoos - (semi permanent), expensive, but if you take out what you would normally spend on eyebrow pencils, waxing shaping etc over the course of the year or so the tattoos last, it is well worth it. I feel so much more confident going out with ‘my eyebrows’ than I did before, especially as chemo left my skin very sensitive, and usually by the time I had my makeup on for an hour I had subconsciously rubbed it off again. My tattooist/makeup/beauty therapist did a special offer whereby if I allowed her to take ‘before and after’ pics, she did the treatment half price - worth asking someone near you if they have similar schemes.

I used Revitalash (given to me as pressie and recommended by some beauty editors i know of top magazines who told me it wax by far the best one) and my eyelashes grew ridiculously long to the point where they bashed against my glasses!! They looked great! Friends commented on them and I had a facial once and the therapist thought they were fake lashes so said she’d avoid the eye area and had a lady on a makeup counter (who must see lots of lashes) tell me that the mascara I was buying shouldn’t be used on my semi-permanent eyelash extensions!! So it definitely worked for me (and this is where the but is!) BUT it’s very expensive and once I stopped using it my eyelashes fell out (think at the end of their life cycle) and grew back sparse and short and stubby as they’d been pre-serum) so I’d have to keep using it all the time to keep my eyelashes long and I also have lots of extra dark eye-lash type hairs around my eyes that i’m convinced is a result of the serum, so had to pluck in the very sensitive areas under and beside my eye.

So, I’m convinced that it works but I’ve stopped using it and have opted for natural-looking fake lashes or extensions when I’m making a bit more of an effort.

X

PS I also smothered it on my brows for a while and they thickened up…but thinned again once I stopped using it. I’m just a bit worried about the long-term usage of it (cost aside!).

Yes - I had heard a few comments to the same effect Sandytoes ie that the effects only last for the life-cycle of lashes/brows so you would have to use them forever. As you say very, very expensive and the products haven’t been around for anyone to know what the long-term side effects might be.
I did wonder about tattoos for eyebrows but wondered how natural they looked - any comments on this one nannbarb please? I do have eyebrows but not as full as they should be.
I had my last herceptin 3 weeks ago and wondered if things would improve now?

Hi Ladies,

I haven’t used this so cannot give recommendations but wanted to say if you were thinking of spending money on this, I had nectar daily deals arrive in my inbox yesterday for DivadermeNatural Angel Simulash Intenso, says should be £46 on the daily deals is £14.

Mods - not sure if I’m allowed to post this link nectardailydeals.com/deal/south-london/20400?utm_term=offer_1&gc_affiliateid=154&gc_affiliateSource=newsletter&gc_newsletter=1&gc_subscriptions=national&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Oct_26_12

In case my link isn’t allowed, go to nectar daily deals (google it) and then click under one of the deals on “See all areas” and put location as “South London”.

I might give it a go for £14 rather than the £50-odd the others seem to cost

Thanks Jelly
As you say, for £14 plus p&p it’s worth a go so ordered some today.

Hi Mazzalou,
I would say they look as natural as you would like, its a matter of the artist helping you pick the right shade for your colouring. I have had nothing but compliments on my brows since I had them done, quite often people lean in for a better look when I tell them they are tattoos. Have a look on her website, there are lots of before/after pics. www.prettypermanentmakeup.co.uk Mary-Anne also consults at Look Good Feel Better sessions throughout Sussex.
The only down side is that, although she uses an anaesthetic cream before she starts the treatment, when it wears off you do feel as though you have fallen flat on your face and grazed your brows, but this feeling does wear off after an hour or so. The aftercare consists of carefully applying vaseline several times a day for first week until any flaking stops.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this treatment to anyone embarking on cancer treatment, I wish I’d had mine sooner, when I couldnt wear makeup during my chemo because of my sensitive skin, I just look relatively ‘normal’ when I look in the mirror, with or withour my wig.

Thanks Nannabarb but a bit out of my way as I live in sunny Norfolk so need to research in my local area.
Jelly - any ideas how the Nectar scheme works please as I have made a payment with my credit card but then I received a voucher code so no ideas what I do with it - Help please!!!

Maz - The voucher is just your receipt, it’s sent as a matter of course. If you’d bought something like restaurant food you’d need to take it to the restaurant but as it’s already paid for inc delivery it’s just your proof of purchase x

Hi ladies
After finishing Herceptin I expected my sparse stubby eyelashes to start growing back as before but they didn’t. I was reluctant to try serums as they were quite expensive and I wondered if they would work. I eventually tried L’oreal Renewal Lash Serum which was under £10! If it didn’t work I hadn’t lost much. After several weeks I started to notice some improvement. I haven’t finished the tube but my eyelashes are so much better. I think the life of an eyelash is 3 months and this serum stops the eyelashes from falling out so they grow their true length. For the money I think it’s worth it but I did use it religeously morning and evening. I forget sometimes now they’ve grown, but I would buy it again.

Thanke Jelly - I must admit that the email that your receive with your voucher code is not at all clear.
Hello Ami and thanks for letting me know about L’Oreal Renewal Lash Serum which might be worth a try if the stuff I’ve ordered doesn’t do the trick. When did you finish your herceptin treatment as I had my last one a month ago now, and last chemo just over a year ago?
And if all else fails, Nannabarb, I shall certainly look into having my eyebrows tattooed. I have always steered clear of any form of cosmetic tattooing pre BC as I was a blood donor who had given 63 donations and aiming for my 75th donation - bc put paid to this . Consequently now that tatttoing on eyebrows is an option I will consider it as a last resort!
Love to you all

Hi Mazzalou
I had finished Herceptin quite a few months before I thought about something for my eyelashes. My hair texture did start to grow much better once I finished Herceptin. As the months went by and the new hair gradually grew it got better and better, but my eyelashes were still not great so I tried the serum, and I do think it’s that which helped. You have to persevere with it and not be impatient or forget to use it, or expect miracles, but for the price I was happy with the result. Hope one of them works for you anyhow. Will be interested to know if it has.

Will keep you posted Ami

Just got a Groupon offer for Pretty Permanent Makeup that Nannabarb was talking about. 79% off eyebrow and eyeliner which I guess would help with eyelash situation).

OOOh thanks Sandytoes, will check that one out, I was thinking of gettiny my eyeliner done, but it is normally quite expensive
Well done Mazzalou on the blood donations, that is fantastic. I did give blood a few times years ago, felt it was my ‘duty’ as I have ‘O’ neg blood, but somehow my squeamishness got in the way, much to my shame… (not squeamish anymore… cant think why…)

Hi SANDYTOES , can you post a link to the groupon offer, I just had a look and cant find it x

Hi NannaB, I think this is the one Sandy means… jelly x
