Lymph node involvement in ILC

On my original letter the consultant says “Axillary lymph node biopsy containing metastatic disease”.

I then had a therapeutic mammoplasty and axillary node clearance.

The latest from oncology says “node negative”.

How can they be different? I don’t understand.

Hi alikat

Thank you for posting.

It is understandable that you have questions about your pathology results when the letters you have received appear inconsistent.

It sounds as though the original biopsy of your lymph node showed some cancer cells but that this was not found in your subsequent axillary clearance. You do not say whether you had any chemotherapy before your operation. Sometimes chemotherapy can cause cancer cells to disappear.

It is important to talk to your breast care nurse or treatment team about the different information in your 2 letters. They will be able to explain what the results mean for you and your treatment.
